freitasm: An update on the media event today...

Interesting information about Nokia Maps being available for other devices but when I tried on my HTC Trophy and LG C900 I couldn't find anything - trying to confirm this now.

Keep us posted - a decent alternative to the native winpho7 maps app is deperately needed!

if it was coming out for other devices, i'd expect:
1) there will be a delay before making it available, to give the nokia handsets a chance to see.  Perhaps there will be a 'cut down' version for other platforms - perhaps online maps only
2) there will be a reasonable cost to purchase

The announcement was last December. During the media event in Wellington Nokia specifically said it was coming, and I asked again "you really mean for devices other than Nokia?" and he said yes.

This is for Nokia Maps, not Nokia Drive. The great thing about Nokia Maps is the ability to load maps of 95 countries - free. No data usage (unless you have AGPS running and it uses mobile data to determine coarse location based on visible WiFi points and cell sites around).

interesting, I didn't realise A-GPS used data off your data plan

I do recall that Nokia have said all along their apps would be sold on the Windows Phone Marketplace to other handset manufacturers devices as well

is the Lumia 800 quad band WCDMA or are their different models for different networks?

On the Parallel Imported website it says the model they are selling is only 900 / 1900 / 2100.

I just need to correct you here Mauricio.
We stated that Nokia Drive will have the full offline navigation, this is Drive ONLY

Nokia Maps will be fully online, with Nokia with Windows Phone handsets and all other Windows Phone handsets.

Nokia Drive = Offline, Exclusive to Nokia handsets
Nokia Maps = Online, available on other devices

I will ask for further information re: availability on Monday

There are two different variants

850/1900/2100
900/1900/2100

We will work towards growing the Windows Phone ecosystem, but will have applications that will be exclusive to Nokia.

A few examples of apps developed by and exclusive to Nokia are:

Nokia Drive - Offline turn by turn naviation with support for 95 countries and 45 languages
Contacts transfer - Transfer contacts off iOS, Android, Blackberry, Series 40, Symbian and Windows Phone via bluetooth

Nokia developed, but available on other Windows Phone handsets:

WRC - World Rally Champs updates and information
TuneIn Radio - Online radio stations
Nokia Maps - Online mapping solution with pedestrian navigation, check in, POI's

A-GPS is "assisted" because it needs to fetch information from a database online, based on information collected from the environment - such as visible cell sites and wireless access points. Based on this information the device can quickly calculate a coarse location, and use this while waiting for a GPS fix.

Cheers I was thinking of buying one while I am here in the UK but if they are not quad band I will give it a miss.

Does anyone know of an update re: the wifi tethering that's meant 'to be coming'? Tethering's somewhat of a deal breaker and it's been disturbingly quiet as to what's happening.

As per the information in the media event, it's still in the coming state.

I've got a significant amount of overseas travel coming up and would prefer a quad-band WCDMA phone to replace my tri-band (850Mhz) HTC Mozart. I'm hoping the Lumia 900 will be quad band, else it might have to be an HTC Titan which is quad-band.

I had a chat to the guy in the car phone warehouse today and they were sure the model they had was quadband pointing at the nokia europe website where it says it supports all 4 frequencies.

Do you think the european one is different?
