BrentR: Not locked to any network.

Yes it is.

Just been to Harvey Normans in Tory Street Wellington, and the $192 price is a LOCKED to 2degrees handset. If you want an unlocked one it's going to cost $499.

That is bad that it is not mentioned on the page anywhere.  It even says Open Network Mobile Phones in the Specs section.  If you can't get an unlocked one for $192, just pay 2d the $30 unlock fee, still a lot cheaper than $499 - https://www.2degreesmobile.co.nz/help-and-support/faqs/how-do-i-unlock-my-phone/

(Fortunately I am on 2d)

Just got mine. I noticed that some boxes had the "locked to 2d" stickers on them, but not all. They all have a "free 2d bonus" sticker on them.

They also had an Office 365 redemption voucher in the box, but the last day for activation was August :(

Yeah, it was obviously a 2D promotional thing, mine had the same sticker and Office 365 offer.

Loving the phone though, except now I have to buy another case/protector after I just bought a new one for the 520 :-p

I just picked up an XL on the weekend too. Tired of waiting for Androids to arrive and my poor old Ativ S has got to the stage where it requires a battery pull every couple of days due to locking up. Really happy with the XL. It is massive and the 8GB internal is a bit on the tight side, but for the price, it can't be beaten. With the ability to install apps to SD, it works fine. Camera is great, sensor core is cool, everything is working really well on it thus far and the screen is really bright and clear despite the lack of resolution. Really very impressed.

I've got a 64GB SD card coming from Amazon (along with a 16GB for wife's S4).  Loving the phone so far.  Really impressed with battery life.  Unplugged it 7:38PM Sunday evening, and still got 67% battery life!  Light use admittedly, but a huge improvement over the 1020 I've come from.

Now just need to wait for W10M, and hope the various app developers make good use of Project Astoria and Islandwood, now known as Windows Bridge - http://blogs.windows.com/buildingapps/2015/08/06/open-sourcing-the-windows-bridge-for-ios/

Nice, I just got a 16GB, but it is getting a bit full even with just apps on it, Need to get a 32GB or 64GB on next payday. The battery life is pretty awesome. Where my Ativ would be on 5-10% at the end of the day, the XL is still sitting above 50%.
*Edit* I take that back, apps only using 2.5GB. Still I have not put any photo's or anything else onto it yet so an upgrade to 32GB is probably going to be worthwhile.

Update - just plugged it into PC to transfer a file, but still had 40% battery left since unplugging on Sunday!

I happily get a couple of days use from one charge on the 640XL.

Milestone for me since becoming a smartphone user. Got two days out of the 640XL without charging. That is a bit of youtube, some netflix, reddit, email, few calls, texts etc. Normal usage for me = 2 days on the 640XL and it was only down to 15% battery. My Ativ S would be flat by 7PM with the same usage. Admittedly, that had a two year old battery though.

Last week I purchased another 640 for $229 from the Warehouse, but this time it replaced my own Samsung Galaxy S3 phone. WP 8.1 is a bit of a paradigm shift from Android, but I've gotten used to it very quickly. Most of the core productivity apps I use either have native WP variants or have decent mobile websites, so aside from Youtube (which I don't use all that much) the migration has gone very well.

Some of the MS apps have given me minor announces, e.g. Office Lens doesn't support my Office 365 business account, so I have to use the OneNote file in my "personal" business account and then copy the new entry over to my business account Onenote file. Not a big issue in the grand scheme of things.

Does anyone have a recommendation of a live tile app to show Outlook tasks? Or should I just wait for Windows 10 to be delivered to the 640 and check out the capabilities of the native Outlook app?

Is the Warehouse one locked? It's in the "Vodafone" category (not "Unlocked"), but on the page it doesn't have a disclaimer.

Do these get down below $229 on sale often? I want to try one of these, but it's hard to justify spending that much on this phone when you can get something like the Smart Ultra 6 with twice as much RAM, 1080p display etc. for $250.

I've seen them under 200 on Expansys.  1GB of RAM is fine on WP it doesn't need 2GB to perform well.

Not locked, no.

No point in locking devices above ~$199 since the unlock fee is a flat $30. Networking locking is all about dropping the upfront price as low as possible.

640 is a nice piece of kit.
