MKV,AVI,XVID etc.

3GPP formats (H.263), ASF, AVI, Flash Video, H.264/AVC, Matroska, MPEG-4, VC-1, WMV 9, XVID

As usual we are in talks with all operators, but we don't have any more information we can share than that. Obviously we will keep you posted on any confirmed info.

In Australia handsets of most brands can be purchased from seemingly authorised retailers without operator affiliations, vanilla OS builds/themes, etc. Are you able to elaborate on why this hasn't happened in NZ?

That used to be the case with the likes of Crazy Johns and All Phones, but with much of the business being pulled back into the operators it's more of a rarity, especially combined with the limited scope of grey market importing.

Why it hasn't happened here is more a story of economies of scale and the loose grey market import laws.

Digit unlock is built in, but there are pattern-lock systems on Symbian so no doubt they will be made available for MeeGo by third-party developers. WiFi Hotspot is built-in.

I don't know if this has been said already, but the head of marketing at Nokia tweeted that the N9 and MeeGo will be supported for a few years with updates and stuff. It's also been speculated heavily that it's gonna be released within 2 months and definitely before WP7. I wonder how much it will cost in NZ and whether it will be marked up heaps because it's a 'rarity'?

I suspect there will be more than just the N9 Meego phone to support despite what some tech review sites are saying. Also I don't see Nokia releasing a phone then not supporting it for a reasonable time.

Several sites are quoting the 19th of August as the release date, that's not that far off and New Zealand is listed as country where the N9 will be released. I wonder how soon we will see it?

I don't see it being marked up because of it's rarity, I see it being priced according to it's capabilities, I would expect around the $1000 mark.

As with all of our products, the Nokia N9 will be supported throughout its lifecycle. Also look at the example of the N900 to see what happens when we launch a device with not only open source but actually open software and hardware -- the community goes mad and continues making content for it years after it stops being sold on the shelf. You can even download a vanilla version of MeeGo for it (note that it has stock UI, not the Nokia Swipe UI that you will see on the N9).
