Technofreak: I decided to give the Mobi City option a try and ordered a couple of 16G units. If I get a better deal before Mobi City ship I figure I can cancel.
I was a little surprised to be informed that since my order came to more than $399 that I would be liable to GST plus a processing fee for the GST. How do Mobi City get away with this? The website is portrayed as being a New Zealand site and doesn't say the price is GST exclusive. I'm not sure Mobi City's actions are legit.
Needless to say I cancelled that order and proceeded by a different route.

Technofreak: That's probably exactly what it is. As I see it they are breaking New Zealand law. If you dont' say whether or not a price is GST exclusive it is deemed to be GST inclusive. They advertise a New Zealand price on what is made to appear to be a New Zealand website. Just because they ship from overseas it doesn't absolve them from complying with New Zealand regulations.
Who is the importer here? I bet most people buying off the www.mobicity.co.nz website don't consider they are doing the importing.
Normal Delivery Schedulehttp://www.mobicity.co.nz/extras/delivery.html
- 1 days handling time.
- Overnight from our Hong Kong warehouse into Sydney International.
- Additional day to Auckland and Wellington through Fedex (www.fedex.com/nz).
- NZ regional deliveries usually take 2 to 7 days through UPS (www.ups.com).
- Packages containing smaller items (e.g. SIM cards and accessories) are sent using Express and Regular Post and usually take 7 to 10 business days to deliver.
ignishin: GAH! Stupid copy+paste fail.
Anyway. Just had a chat to a MobiCity clerk.
He informed me that because they are shipping from their Hong Kong warehouse as "imports" GST is not being charged. I then asked him "why are people reporting that they will have to pay GST providing orders go over $399 in total". His response was "as far as I am aware the price is for the unit, and the total you will have to pay + shipping costs, if you would like to double check you can email us so your question will be forwarded to the right person."
Still a bit of a gray area. Truth be told I am still quite keen on a unit, but not sure if I am $299 on an already over used credit card, keen.
Oh, and also they are expecting stock in 10-16 days.

Best they get their website up to speed then because the GST warning happened to me. It was going to add another $46 to the price of each unit.
Yep the $299 plus freight is a bit hard to take after the $139 prices of last week, and to think I could have got a 32 Gb one for $209 but I turned it down as I wanted two units plus I didn't need the extra memory and figured I could get the 16Gb elsewhere.![]()
However at $299 it's still a lot of tablet for the money, many of the new owners seem quite impressed with the Touchpad.
The Mobicity price might also curb the TradeMe prices somewhat.
asmcar:
Try sending them an email about lack of GST details on the site? They have been responsive to enquiries i've had. Just tried live chatting them too to try and get a definite about whether they have secured stock. Seems to be a bit of lack of communication between support staff and whoever is doing the buying:
