The WiFi Hotspot update is not live yet, AFAIK, coming next week for some models.

Some models? Is this a further combination of manufacturer and MS, or is MS only providing for certain handsets, or are some handsets simply not capable of performing this function?

^ It's more to do with carrier approval, firmware and drivers written by OEM's and whether they want to grant this feature as well because some might want you to buy the new mango handsets.

Do whatever you want to do man.

No need for some "Microsoft being evil" tin foil hat. It's just that some OEM might use a chipset that is not capable of performing the functions needed.

Unlike here in New Zealand some carriers (particularly the US) don't want you to be able to tether or hotspot the phone out of the box.  They want to be able to sell you another service/product for that.  I guess since Microsoft is based in the US and I guess at the moment primarily selling into that market  the tethering options haven't had a high priority up till now.

And that's not only a Microsoft problem, because it's the same for all other platforms.

In regards to WiFi hot spot, Nokia N8 you have to buy additional software, but my Androids and iPhone don't have that issue. Admittedly, I only entered the Droid scene at 2.2.

I love the WP7 UI, but not much else. If Nokia get it right, with their hardware (esp Camera) and matured WP7 that supports the same BlueTooth devices that Symbian ^3 does then it could be a real competition to iPhone and S2.

I agree. One example is Nokia who have suffered with some carriers in the US as they have refused to modify their phones to suit the carriers restrictive requirements. No doubt other manufacturers have been affected in some way. Perhaps this is part of the reason for the proliferation of aftermarket versions of Android.

In my original post I mentioned Microsft only since we were discussing WP7.

Locked down hotspoting/tethering  is thanks to American carriers offering "unlimited" mobile broadband but not wanting people to go nuts with it

Does anyone know if the lack of SMSsync is due to vendor (HTC), OS (MS) or Operator (VF)?

All HTC 1st Gen phones will be receiving the wireless hotspot via Dark Forces Team custom ROM within the next 2 weeks. The developer only needs 2 days to finish implementing the last of the 22 languages they include and he has 8 days in a row of work.

They even have an update tool now, I can back up and restore my apps, settings and messages across custom ROM flashes just like with the Zune update.

So if they have it working, the official version must be coming along nicely!

I doubt very much it will be due directly to Microsoft, and more a matter of development roadmap timing. I have a contact inside the Redmond campus who says MS have a large team working very hard on developing WP into a fully competitive and attractive OS. Feedback and suggestions from users is actively encouraged e.g.

Thanks. I made the following (I believe constructive) comment on update delivery, responding to a contributors comment

"Updates not depends of operators... like apple
Is a fail that windows phone customers depends of operators for get updates"

Ideally, also decouple from hardware Vendors. Zune is a copy of part of the Apple model. Google are having handsets produced for their Android OS, so, MS should commission their handset. Only 1 model. The flagship model, with all features that WP7 has to offer turned on at full noise. BlueTooth HID, tethering, HDMI. Make it expensive, if Apple has taught us nothing, if it's awsome, they will pay.

MS, you have a good start on WP7, now make it shine!

I updated to Mango but now whenever I try to download an app from Windows Marketplace it gives me an error code 80004003. Does anyone know what's up?
