scottharman: So for all those that have managed to snag a Touchpad - are you sticking with WebOS or do you think you'll be moving forward with Android?

If I get one which at this stage doesn't look all that promising, (depends on MobiCity) I'll be sticking with WebOS.  From all accounts it's a very good OS and I suspect better than Android.  It will do everything I need it for without the need for a whole lot of apps.  I had been looking at the Topuchpad prior to the fire sale, the main draw back was the price prior to the sale was too steep for the budget.

If you need/want a vast number of apps then I guess porting Android across will be a worthwhile move, if not I don't see the point.

I have a 3 year old Palm TX which still does an excellent job.  I'm not sure about Android but with WebOS you can install an app directly onto the device without the need to obtain it via the market.  In it's hey day the likes of the Palm T3, T5, TX, Livedrive etc had some really great apps which were developed by individuals, these apps could be got via a variety of providers or directly form the developer or you could make one yourself and put it straight onto your device.

Was a bit gutted, as I was trying to get a colleague to pick one up in the UK - but our office is just down the road from Vodafone HQ - so it would appear there was a bit of a mad dash by about 200 cars heading to our local Dixons to buy up all the stock last week.

I was dead keen on waiting for the Android port (if it happens of course) but the more I read about Webos and the tweaks available (speed improvements, apps) on Precentral, the more I may just stick with it...

Also reading more and more about even Honeycomb not being that great on tablets?

You can install apps on Android without the market either and without having to do anything to the phone like rooting, new ROMS or in Apple terms jailbreaking them.

It does lead to more risk in terms of viruses and bad apps out there but it's easy to do.

I was also planning on getting a Touchpad but only because it was cheap. It would have been been for my wife since all she wants is web and email and it does that fine.

This doesn't fill me with confidence.... should I return the case I bought? Money mouth

From mobicity:

Update 01/09/2011It's no longer a secret that HP actually has a last run of TouchPads, as it made the news yesterday:

http://techcrunch.com/2011/08/30/hp-were-producing-one-last-run-of-touchpads-to-meet-demand/

We were told by HP last week pretty much what the techrcunch article states. Due to commitments and prepayments of components, it's cheaper to finish building the remaining stock and recover the costs rather than to throw away the parts and components.

As it currently standst, HP is now building the remaining units. They are not able to give an actual ship date, but are confident it's happening in September. In fact, all recent correspondence points to a time within the next few weeks. This is because those units are coming from the same batch that is in the process of beinf manufactured as HP wants them as early as possible too. While we originnally advised shipment after September 1st according to the initial information, a mid September shipment is more likely. As you can understand there is currently a very high demand for the device but there is no way to expedite the process as all supply is sold out everywhere until these new units hit the shelves.

As may also be aware, there are a lot of people trying to weasel their way into HP right now to obtain these stocks, but please remember we are dealing directly with HP, and we are not simply dealing with a major reseller. As the agent is meeting with HP reps next Thursdsay to finalise the details, please allow till next Friday, US time, for the next update with more ETA information.

Following this we will also update our customers once stock arrives and then provide tracking information by email once shipped. Until this time or until our allocation is sold out, new orders will continue to be verified and placed into backorder. Order details can be changed and updated at any time prior to shipment, but an order is required to lock in your TouchPad as demand is still extremely high. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us.

@fab - I think I agree... talking to the guys back in the UK, there seems to be an even split of people tweaking WebOS, and those hacking about with Android ports. Looks like the Gingerbread ports just aren't quite there yet, but the coming months should prove interesting.

By all accounts, the hardware is fantastic, and the design is pretty good - I'm still holding out hopes that one of the guys in our offices in NY or LA can pick one up for me (and mark the courier package as business samples ;))
I think that with the tweaks that are out there - it would be pretty fantastic!

I've heard nothing from MobiCity.  I've checked my order and it's still shows the status level as 3 and with the following note attached.

About Your Order

30/08/2011 8:39:44 AMUnfortunately your order has not been able to be security verified at this time and has been escalated to our verification team. We will shortly attempt to contact you during business hours on the contact phone number(s) provided prior to shipping. If we are unable to reach you within 3 days your order may be cancelled. Apologies for any inconvenience. - IK

This note has been there all the time but no contact yet.  I see a hold has been placed on my credit card for the price of my order, though I guess this this happens anyway when you place the order.

I wonder how large this manufacturing run will be to use up the parts?  I'm wondering that it may be nearly as big as the original run.  With the lead times that are probably involved in the supply of parts, and presumably HP's original intention was to have the Touchpad on the market for quiet some to come, you might expect that they would have been planning a to produce a significant number of Touchpads in the next production run, especially as there would be a minimum economic number for each run.

I suspect there will be more than just enough for the US market.  Here's hoping.

Also nothing's been mentioned about the 4G units that were supposed to be released about now.  Perhaps the parts for these will be used in this next run with the 4G option disabled?

You can call them yourself to verify your order, I did before I cancelled mine and bought it one on eBay for a little less (TP is currently on it's way to Oregon forwarders address). Their 09 number transfers to Australia I think, It's on the bottom of the homepage.

When I was on live chat they said they shipped in order of when each order was verified, not when the order was placed. Although mobicity have gone back on a few things they've said so may not be true.

So, MobiCity have said time and time again that they have secured stock, but are still actually trying to secure said stock.

And now they say that the stock that they haven't actually secured hasn't ACTUALLY been manufactured yet?

Umm, alarm bells?

Has anyone on here received a Touchpad from Mobi City since the fire sale?  If so how recently?

Also they said they had a big backlog of verifications to make, that was on Monday, not sure what's happening now but stopped hassling them after I cancelled my order.

I read somewhere that the next lot will be US only and the Brits are not happy so you can imagine if they are not getting them, we are probably not going to either. Time to touch up your US Facebook friends!
