Can someone confirm that the 3G can in fact be turned off in the N95? (i.e. - forced to use GSM only mode).

Starting to look like the ideal replacement for my SE W900. I'm sure I can justify the cost somehow.

Hi everyone,

I have what would appear to be probably a simple question about using a parallel imported phone. I am very interested in buying the Nokia N95 but do worry about it being parallel imported. I have purchased phones before while living overseas so this is not completely foreign to me but I have not done it after having paid such a high price for a phone - hence my apprehension.

I have been onto the Nokia website (UK) and they offer the settings for the N95 through their set up option. So will these work here in NZ and therefore provide the same user experience as one from Vodafone Live? I know there is no guarantee etc but does anyone have experience of this or know if it works or not?

Yes, 3G can be turned off (at least on non-branded handsets, don't know if this holds true for branded).

From what I've seen elsewhere the phone will not be able to offer the same user experience as V-Live! Other users here have reported that not all the features of V-Live! work on their imported handsets, although this is fixable when Vodafone starts selling them here.

I would expect a non-branded N95 to actually offer a better user experience than the branded one. . . overseas people have been having a poor experience with branded handsets compared to standard.

So urchasing a parallel imported phone could provide a better experience? Any anything lacking should be sorted when N95 is sold here?

enfield: Parallel imported doesnt specify which colours they have available , I gues it would be just silver . Plum is nice

They say on the Parallel Imported website: "two colours available." I assume that there are only two colours available from Nokia any way so I would say that Parallel Imported have both silver and plum available.

I like the plum but on the Nokia website the Silver looks a bit like a champaign/ gold silver and I like that colour also. I would have to see it in real life to make up my mind.

Can't beat the burble of that American V8. Ohh yea!

Thats what I expect, although this is based on some speculation on my part, which I'm basing off the experience that Vodafone users have been having overseas with their branded units.

Basically Vodafone has disabled VOiP capabilities, and there appears to be some collateral damage from their firmware changes to prevent VOiP (phone more prone to crashing, WiFi problems). I can see how it makes sense for a carrier to prevent free-calling from handsets they sell, so I would expect that Vodafone will do the same here, although I am open to the possibility that I may be pleasantly surprised.

EDIT: I've had the Plum one in my hands at eTown, I think its exceptionally nice, whereas the "Sand" version I don't like at all. From what I see around the net it looks like most people prefer Plum, but whichever people like they tend to loath the other colour option.

OK so does that mean that the Wifi doesn't work only on the parallel imported phones or on Vodafone ones too? The wifi part is a big reason for me wanting to get one.

WiFi should work on both, however quite a few people with Voda-branded N95 handsets are finding WiFi quite buggy, whereas the experience appears uniformly good on non-branded handsets (non-branded being the same as Parallel Imported ones).

I expect that you will not be able to make VOiP calls over WiFi on Voda-branded N95's.

If anyone is interested, I believe I may have found a guy in Auckland selling N95's from Singapore for around the $1300 to $1350 mark. I'm meeting with him tonight to check them out, but I'm 99% certain this is a genuine seller. He has Sand and Plum, they come with a 1GB card (should also come with the leather case and screen protector as from Singapore, will confirm when I meet him). He is not offering any kind of warranty, however they will come with the Manufacturers warranty. I think I can get it down to the $1300 mark, but obviously this is easier if I can give him some indication of how many others may like to purchase at that price. Also, what questions would people like me to ask?

Incidentally, Fraktul are you reading this? I think this is the guy you purchased from, if you are Fraktulpalladin on Trademe that is. If that is true do you have any feedback about the seller?

EDIT: I will also see whether he is happy for users to check several handsets before buying (should be reassuring to people who are concerned with build quality and slider-play).

Yep, still have that order and will feedback to everyone about how that works out. I may buy one off this guy for my fiance for her birthday though, as an expansys order may not arrive before then, so going to check it out anyways.
