We’ve been looking at the options offered by the big three, Vodafone, Telecom and 2 degrees for the mobile phone requirements for a business we are setting up.  Since we are already using Nokia phones and for a variety of other reasons Nokia is our preferred brand.

I got told today that Telecom downgrade the specs of Nokia phones when they put them on the Telecom network.  To me this seems to be an unusual thing to do.  

Does anyone know if this sort of thing is happening?

What sort of things would this person be referring to?

Hi TechnoFreak,

I can confirm that we do not change any of the technical specifications of any of our phones.

We do make minor SW changes to our phones as all telcos do. All this includes is flashing the Internet & MMS settings to the handset, Internet Bookmarks and Startup and Shutdown logos.

I can't possibly imagine why a telco would do this or what on earth they mean by 'crippling'.

Neither could I.  My use of the the word "cripple" was perhaps a bit dramatic. The info was relayed second hand but  was along the lines of de-specing or downgrading the device.  

Didn't make sense to me though I hear some Telcos in the USA want Nokia to remove some facilities like tethering and Ovi maps so that they can sell their own systems, I'm sure Telecom is not up to those tricks.

Does this person have industry knowledge?

In other words, how credible would this person be?

For that one "Yes" answer, if the person would benefit in any way from saying that Telecom does something with handsets they sell (as in preventing you from changing providers, or getting your business), then I'd discard the information as biased - and like you did, try to get third party information.

The only carrier that i know has crippled anything is AT&T who cripple HSPA+ an their normal 3G fones and want you to pay extra to go to a so called "4G" model like the Infuse 4G which runs HSPA+..

Isn't that typically American to call something an upgrade that's not an upgrade.  I've noticed them calling stuff 4G when we know it as 3G.

The iPhone (with iPhone 3G then iPhone 4) didn't help, since many users though it the model name was iPhone 4G (which wasn't), meaning a 4G cell technology was being used... And so things get screwed.
