Hi cool

Need to replace the trusty Samsung 40 inch LCD Full HD TV (6.5 Years use of hard gaming and streaming), about once a week you very quickly spot a 1-2 inch pixel burning away, comes and goes but anyway, decision made

Like the above TV, the new one is to be used as a 2nd TV/Computer Monitor - hooked up to a Gaming PC via HDMI

I am in the $1000-$1300 Price bracket

The MMO Game, Star Wars the Old Republic is my main source of entertainment whereby I consistently run at 60FPS- I have seen at times 80 to just over 100 and also as low as 30 but 60 is the norm when I test in game

I only realised today that the old Samsung I am replacing is 60HZ

So my queries are this

With a 60HZ TV I cant of been receiving 80 to 100+ FPS ? Would that be correct ? I presume now that my PC in conjunction with the game server is allowing the possibility of 80 to 100 FPS ? but the TV maxing out at 60HZ puts a stop to that ?

I am going to buy 100 HZ this time around partly based on this info, lot of 50HZ out there but am steering clear of them

Is what I am getting at correct ? That the relationship between FPS and TV HZ are vital for MMO PVP Gamers ?

Appreciate any assistance, thanks

With that budget, you'd be wiser to go with G-sync monitors of higher resolution (4k) if your GPU can handle it And it will be more beneficial for playing MMO. I know I would appreciate bigger resolution so I can spread my HUDs out a bit more (I play FFXIV).

cheers mate, trying to move past 50HZ TVs but a great price none the less

with 34 my absolute min size, and bearing in mind its not Gsync what do you think of these >>> http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php?z=p&p=MONLGL53457&name=LG-34UM57-P-34-21:9-UltraWide-IPS-Monitor---Freesy

outside of the above monitor, looking at 40 to 43 inches and 100HZ full hd tvs, also bearing in mind, its also used for movies, sport and TV

cheers

Well, personally, I don't think the TV will be any beneficial to you when connecting to PC, it will be locked to 60hz (I could be wrong but most manual will say 1920x1080@60hz).

Computer monitors especially those with G-sync or FreeSync are made to handle higher refresh rate from the GPU - if they support it.

What's your system/GPU? Is it G-sync(nVidia)/FreeSync(AMD) capable?

Also, I did a quick search and yeah, the HZ in tvs work differently to HZ in monitors: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1439444

Thanks again for that Info, learning all the time

so 60HZ is my limit with an HD TV - good to know

GPU - AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series - Unsure if this has support for Freesync and by the looks the GPU is limited to 60HZ, again, news to me which I have just researched

I do feel like I am much better off with more info pre purchase now so I appreciate your help

Radeon HD 7900 doesn't support FreeSync unfortunately. However, if there's a prospect of upgrading your GPU in near future, then for the time being it is worth considering monitors that support high refresh rates. However, your next question to ask is probably whether your GPU can support higher resolution than 1080p at suitable refresh rates, and whether it is worth investing now on new monitor/tv etc.

If it is my purchase - as mentioned earlier - as MMORPG player, screen estate is more important so I had a look at those 21:9 1080p or even 1440p (ultra wide) monitors then I have great central view for my character and the HUDs can spread around the side to reduce clutter or blocking my viewport. The one you linked earlier was one of the choice I had in mind too, next one down is the 29" for slightly affordable pricetag.

cheers mate

leaning toward that LG 34 Monitor even though I will not have the ability to utilise Freesync technology, not the end of the world for me, I was extremely happy with the picture quality of a now 6 yr old Samsung tv, so Im guessing I will be very happy with this monitor

Whats your view on hdmi cables ? I see there are high speed versions, a 2.0 version of HDMI and previous to this other versions ....... would you purchase 2.0 ? or is this for these 4k monitors ?

It depends on the GPU. Given your GPU won't be HDMI 2.0 compliant, I won't worry of the cable version.

Does the GPU not have DisplayPort? That is more ideal over HDMI.

Looking at Radeon HD 7900 series, it had DVI-D DPs and HDMI, I'd go with DP option first then DVI-D then HDMI. As DP and DVI-D should be able to drive 60hz of high resolution easily and HDMI would limit to 30hz on 4K display of it is not HDMI 2.0.

Yes it does ! and I should have mentioned that ..... have only just researched what they are all about, will get one of them if it does not come with eventual monitor .......

Just 1 final question on the monitor, I keep finding great monitors, the choices are killing me ...... so because I buy an Ultra High Def Monitor but the GPU output is 1920 x 1080 @ 60 HZ I would set the Monitor to this level wouldn't I ? so I don't lose any of my current FPS in MMO ? Its highly likely that I keep this PC and GPU for at least another 18 months and even then, will probably only replace GPU at that point so I want to run it as Optimum as I can, I'm just afraid the Ultra Def will have an affect on my FPS ?

Thoughts ?

Well personally, I will drop some quality for higher resolution if that possible for MMO... considering that I've been playing FFXIV on low quality for Full HD resolution for over a year or so now. I'd go for higher resolution if my HDMI could deliver it but sadly it can't. Mu laptop is only GeForce 730m. lol Even running FFXIV with DX11 it still look pretty good and I know I can look forward to great ultra quality in near future when I build a power gaming machine :-D

good points mate, I will consider keeping the higher resolution for a drop in FPS, my instinct is to do the opposite to you lol, and tone it down to match the PC and keep the fps and pump up the resolution when the GPU permits but I will certainly give it a go and see what the loss is, I only PVP so FPS is imperative for me

Whats addictive about FFXIV ? or what do you like most about it ? never played it

Just buy a cheap tv. the picture stuff that makes the good ones better is disabled in gaming mode to reduce latency, so you may as well have bought one without it.

Latency for TVs is hard to find. Comparing my veon 16" that I got to watch the driveway camera on is noticibly laggy compared to my 144Hz gaming monitor on the same machine, even when I drop it to 60Hz as well. But its a small not even full HD TV.

The 39" veons I got for the garage seem fine for latency, but I have not put them beside a real monitor to see how they compare. Probably not great but they are no worse than my samsung is in gaming mode for latency.
