Up to now I've been getting games off Big Fish, but after losing a whole bunch of credits because I wasn't using them quick enough, I thought I'd look for something more substantial - I think I find the BF games a bit easy these days.

Requirements:

1. Playable on PC/laptop (I have CD drive)

2. I need to be able to play it offline, but don't mind being online some of the time.

3. Not interested in playing with others

4. Want to be absorbing but not too intellectually challenging - it is to play during down time following a day at work

5. Using a mouse, so not particularly dexterous

6. Takes more than a few days to play.

7. Not interested in shoot-em up, war, car/truck games (I'm female, which might help). Don't mind sci-fi but doesn't have to be.

8. Only prepared to pay a higher price if I know it has long game play.

Laptop is Sony Vaio, Windows 10, 2.10 GHz processor, installed RAM 4.00 GB, 64-bit

Any suggestions?

Have you tried games like Mass Effect or Dragon Age or the like? Basically RPGs. Can last a long time and the older ones are not too intensive so will probably work ok on your laptop.

Also, you should look at Steam.

Do you like indie style games? I would recommend something like Papers, Please from gog.com (you may find it cheaper elsewhere).

It's simple and easy to pick up with an interesting, dark story line. Basically you are a border official in a fictional (cold war) Eastern European country. The graphic style fits and I highly recommend it. There are alternative ending and you can play it quickly or stretch it out over a month, plus it has some replay value.

I recommend FTL Faster Than Light http://store.steampowered.com/app/212680/

You can play the whole thing with a mouse (but be sure to use the spacebar to pause when assigning orders to give you time to think).

Single-player only, can play offline after downloading from Steam. I've sunk over 80 hours into it since it has excellent replay value. Think of it as being the commander of a spaceship in which you assign orders to your crew and ship's systems to work your way through random encounters in space.

I would recommend you pick up Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic on Steam. It's old and cheap, but one of the best RPGs ever made and definitely shook up the entire genre and industry. It's sequel is also good, but definitely play them in order.

You should check out Pop Cap Games they have lots (40+) games like these that meet your requirements.

Alternatively you should get a tablet, as thats where most casual games end up these days (like plants vs zombies etc) iPad has the best tablet apps, but android has plenty of titles.

Check out the remake of Day of the Tentacle on gog.com, awesome adventure game.

Or any of you liked the Back to the Future movies, check out the Back to the future game by Telltale Games.

Minecraft is always a good fallback if you like creative, open ended, not story driven type games.

If your computer can handle it, then most recent Tomb Raider or if your specs cant quite make it, then the 2013 Tomb Raider some of the best personal gaming experiences.

As other's have said, start with GOG. If you don't need/want the latest and greatest, there's some awesome stuff on there for dirt cheap.

I like RPGs, and some of the golden age Bioware/Black Isle stuff is on there (NeverWinter, Baldur's Gate, and Icewind Dale).

The old LucasArts stuff is pretty awesome (Monkey Island is my favourite).

I've got all sorts of other impulse buys in my GOG account that I've never downloaded, much less played, so be warned before signing up.

I don't get nearly enough time to play games any more, and very very seldom complete anything, but I recently finished South Park's the Stick of Truth. If you like South Park-style humour it is awesome, and the gameplay was surprisingly engaging.

Monkey Island :) Runs on anything, is a great game, and lets you use a rubber chicken with a pulley in it :D

Google for "Strategy Games". My favourite is the Sid Meier Civilization series.

Beware that this can result in the "I'll just make one more move before going to bed..." thought at 4:30am.

do you mean specifically games about war, but having combat is fine?

Or are you looking for games with little or no combat in them?

A few of the games mentioned above are RPGs (role playing games) but typically the stories revolve around a war of some kind along with quite a lot of action and combat involved.

Got thoroughly hooked on The Witness. My wife is now playing it too (she's not a gamer by any stretch either). It may fall down on your "not too intellectually challenging" requirement. Some aspects of the game are very challenging. Others not so much. I loved picking it up after a day at work (and once the kids were in bed).

I don't mind a bit of combat so long as it's not the whole point of the game, i.e. to win the war, and then win the next war, .... So, an explorer type game that involved fighting off the occasional pirate ship, might be ok so long as there were other parts to it, e.g. maps, treasure, problem solving
