I don't know much about them but I went to PB Tech today to see if I could find exactly what I'm looking for. I couldn't. They suggested JB Hi-Fi & EB Games (I've yet to go to either - going past a mall on any day is bad enough, but going inside on a weekend, nah - that's never going to happen).

It's for a motorcycle game and possibly some other racing genre stuff, like a rally one or two, maybe GTA V, mainly for the lazy miserable wet weather days.

My criteria are:

Non-negotiable:

Wireless
Rechargeable by simply plugging in a cable, preferable USB Micro B so I can use my phone chargers (absolutely not interested in using one use Alkaline or rechargeable NiMH AA batteries and having to remove them to recharge)
Dual stick (in the same plane not like the PS4 controller I saw)

Bonus:

Force feedback

I'll try and do some online research but as always it's a major sorting the wheat from the chaff with all the half-truths and omitted information.

In the meantime, does anyone have any other recommendations?

I just use my xbox controller on my computer with the microsoft reciever. You can add the play and charge kit to it to make it rechargable.

Dont bother with the logitech f710 - its wireless is like their cheap consumer wireless keyboards ones, seems to prioritize battery life over range and low latency.

Yeah, I looked at the XBox one but I don't think I can live with that joystick layout (I got confused between the PS4 and XBox above but I can't see a way to correct it).

I did consider that Logitech one, but it uses AA batteries so I dismissed it.

It looks like this may be the go: Sony Dualshock PS4 v2

It's annoying at PB Tech Manukau - they have two areas for game controllers - one on the hangers and one in the glass cabinet. I'm surprised based on my criteria they didn't suggest the Sony one.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Its no longer the case with the xbox one controllers, they are now fully supported in windows and you can buy the wireless adapter separately, or use bluetooth if you have the correct model.

Both Xbox One and the Playstation Dualshock 4 v2 controllers are micro usb and can charge + connect via usb. Otherwise they have built-in Bluetooth for wireless or their own wireless dongle (Sony wireless, or xbox dongle). It's generally a better buy to get a good bluetooth receiver for other devices (eg. speakers) than pay for a dongle that only works for the controller as they perform about the same.

They both also come with an integrated audio dac, just plug in your 3.5mm headphones into them and get basic sound from wherever you're sitting.

The only features the Sony controller has over the xbox one is a touchpad in the center plus a gyro sensor so you can use motion controls for steering if you set it up. It's not as accurate as say the Steam Controller but it's a nice to have.

The Xbox controllers are usually easier for plug-and-play as Microsofts drivers work well on windows (of course) for Xinput games. Another point is that a lot of games built for Windows will use xbox button prompts (eg. A,B,X,Y vs X,O, square, triangle). If you know the button layouts off by heart then this is a non-issue.

If you use Steam it does a great job of interfacing with your controllers and providing remapping for most controller types you plug in. It will also handle the Dualshock Dinput to Xinput translations for any game you launch through steam.

A note on price, both controllers often go down to $75 usually at noel leeming. Otherwise you'll end up paying around the $100-120 mark off the shelf at most places.
