I have this game on CD (bought from The Warehouse many years ago). It worked fine on my old XP machine, but won't even install under my new one (with Windows 10, 64 bit). I tried running it in Compatibility Mode, even just the installer, but it says it is not a 64-bit application.

Is there any hope for me to install it on my new machine, or is it a write-off?

If you get it working it's worth the effort

A quick Google search turned up the following: https://www.dosgamers.com/windows95-98/win95-games/dune-2000

Otherwise I was going to suggest spinning up a 32bit virtual machine to run it.

i went back to play this one a year or so ago...

by the time i finally got it going my reaction was instant..

This isn't how i remember the graphics at all, they used to be impressive!!

was a major let down and i ended up putting it away again...

It's also just a 16bit installer... game itself is 32 bit. so copy it across and you should be good to go.

Sorry what do you mean by "copy it across"? I'm trying to run the installer direct from the CD and I'm getting this:

like, use windows explorer rather than the launcher..

Don't click setup. Alternatively, use the many online sources

eg. http://www.bestoldgames.net/eng/old-games/dune-2000.php

Use your cd key and all is dandy.

Thanks. I used your link to get it that way instead, but seems to be some issue with the resolution and the graphics displaying correctly.
Tried DOSBox to run it, "This program cannot be run in MS-DOS mode".

It's not a dos game, it's a 32bit game, installer is 16bit though.

I'd make sure you have Directplay enabled.

Gruntsmod will also improve the graphics.

Hmm it's a little trickier than I thought :(

How about this one (apparently the sequel)? Ever played this, and was it any good?

quickymart: ... but it says it is not a 64-bit application.

Microsoft removed 16bit support from its OS a while ago. As previously stated, you can try to extract the executables and data files yourself, thus bypassing the installer. You can also try to enable 16bit application support.

Tried this option but I don't seem to have that feature available (or installable) :(

I played this recently on windows 10, it was a legit download from somewhere ...

Edit, looks like I used an above linked site but with no problems.
