Is there a consensus in the NZ gaming community whether any ISPs offer better Ping than others to USA servers?

My contract is up for renewal, and lately I've been getting terrible spikes in the evenings. Playing mostly WOT on NA, out of Dunedin - I'm currently on gigabit fiber, so that's what I'm looking at.

TIA

Any reason why you don't disclose your current ISP, so people could compare?

And, are you playing via Ethernet? Really need more information with what your setup is like also as the problem could be something else.

No - not really - was hoping not to bias replies by getting the squeaky wheel effect, i.e. people who had problems with my current ISP in the past being more likely to reply / experience a placebo effect when they changed.

FWIW, I'm currently with MyRepublic. In fairness - the problem seems to be more with packet loss rather than ping as such, always in the evenings though, but only to USA.

Yep - Cat 6 cable to gigabit port on the router, comp is 1800X @ 4.8GHz w/ 580RX /16GB Win10

I can get a more stable, if higher, ping by messing around with VPNs. With WoT 200ms ping is the limit of playability... Used to be ~160 and reliable till this year.

You could always play arty - 250 ping to Hong Kong doesn't make any difference 🤣

Oh - I have had to... believe me...

But, When you are getting 1-2 second drop outs, and stuff starts to teleport around; even arty won't save you. :-/

If you're concerned about ping overseas then both Spark and 2degrees have solid networks.

BigPipe will actually be a reasonable choice for international gaming. 2degrees is also great (and priced a little cheaper given the $200 credit). Both have good international connectivity. If you're using the ISP provided router then the Fritz!Box that 2degrees provide will give you good speeds + WiFi and doesn't have any form of a device limit.

It does sound like you've done all the testing to prove it is a problem with MyRepublic. I believe you here, I have a colleague with a similar problem currently. Amusingly they've removed their statement on the "Gamer" plans around latency now but believe me - they're not at all the fastest with Steam as each ISP has their own Steam cache anyway.

Pick your poison but really you'll do well shifting away from MyRepublic to a more competent ISP.

Saying that, I was having weird dropouts to the HK server a couple of hours ago, playing arty, but they went away after a minute or so.

Thanks for the advice - I kind of suspected as much. TBH; I joined when Dunedin got the gig city thing, and when I was the only fiber house in the street, with the neighbourhood box literally at the bottom of my driveway, things were good... They hit my neighbourhood hard every few months and, as more and more people signed up, things started to degrade. Oh well, we had a good run.

Thanks again, one and all.

I recently switched from Vodafone cable to 2 degrees fibre 100/20 and my ping to aussie servers and US based servers has dropped quite a bit. I have now moved to Invercargill and they have gone back up sadly, but I guess that is expected due to distance. In Wellington I was getting just under 40MS to Sydney wow servers and now its 50.

Currently from Invercargill it is approx 160 to LA. In Wellington that was 150. That is on an Ethernet connection to ONT.

Apologies for hijacking a bit, but I was going to try this out quickly just using the Windows speedtest app, but it won't show any servers beyond Australia. any (obvious) ideas ?

If all you want is to test ping, just issue tracert [server address] - see my screenshot, from command prompt.

Thank you. That worked. Not sure what it means but just idle curiosity at the moment.
