I have had my ASUS Republic Of Gamers Strix G16 (2023) gaming laptop for over two years now. I originally purchased it to play games while working overseas. Sadly, I have yet to have any game fully work on it, and it has become more of a paperweight of late. I have had several different people take a look and assess the issues with no luck. I am getting desperate, as my next step might be to smash it with a hammer and move on with my life.

It will run smoothly for all instances, except for video games! It loads quickly; however, when the game is running, it lags about every second. This makes any game unplayable and therefore makes the laptop unusable ( I have a work computer for everyday stuff). I deleted Armoury Crate based on advice from other internet posts and am currently using GUnit to put my computer into "Turbo" mode. All of my NVIDIA Drivers are up to date, along with Windows updates, game updates, and anything else I could think of.

I have attached most of what I could find to assist with this issue. I am happy to provide more information if needed.

Check for BIOS updates

Check the software that controls the video chipsets to ensure its using the right video card (as its showing multiple cards detected) when gaming.

Check the BIOS if theres an option to force it to just the gaming video card and see if the issue goes away.

At the start of the GTA video when you had task manager open, it was only showing as 1.0Ghz being used - this would could issues if its not ramping up properly.

Have you done a full Windows re-install since owning it ? If not, I'd potentially do it - a clean install, not the probably supplied one on the drive already.

Other thing is, it could be overheating - do the fans go nuts when gaming ?

My ASUS app confirms my BIOS is up to date.

I went through an NVIDIA Panel tutorial and updated all the recommended settings with no success.

I did not see a BIOS option to "force" the gaming video card.

I sent it to ASUS for a warranty claim about 1.5 years ago, and it came back wiped. Not sure IF they actually did, nor would I know how to fresh install Windows.

PC always seems to run cold. I bought a fan to sit under it while I game, and even when I do find time to play games, it is only for an hour or two at a time.

Is your laptop plugged into power when you’re gaming?

Have you checked the power settings to ensure it’s not throttling?

Reminded me of this video describing something very similar on strix laptops

The latest bios appears to be version 333 from 12/12/2025.

I would double check the version number you're on in something like CPU-Z.

This almost sounds like the GPU isn’t being cooled almost at all - as if whatever thermal compound hasn’t been applied correctly. This would cause it to do exactly as you’re saying.

what you're describing is thermal throttling, the CPU/GPU getting too hot.

most laptops GPU and CPU are cooled by the same thermal transfer system, so when one gets hot both gets hot, and then you get 4 FPS.

Log the temperatures, frequencies, and power usage of both CPU and GPU while playing a game. This will let you analyse whether a) the CPU and GPU are boosting to the right frequencies; b) whether they are overheating and thermal throttling.

Update BIOS.

Reinstall Windows is a good start.

To improve your chances of isolating the issue, also boot into Linux via a live disk and run some kind of demanding visual benchmark to simulate a game.

CPU/GPU is not getting used at all, they’re practically idle. My bet is low power mode. Make sure you’re plugged in to the original charger or a high powered one. You can’t use the laptop on battery at full performance.

Something to check if you're not running a clean install minus OEM cruft, I had an Asus laptop the other day that was pegging a core and running choppy with an ambient light temperature utility for adapting the monitor colour to environmental lighting. Can you run resource monitor on an external monitor and see if anything stands out?
