Hi, I am looking and a new setup for gaming. I was looking at the HD5970 and a motherboard with a 785g chipset what has onboard HD4200 video. These motherboards support Hybrid CrossFireX what allows the dedicated video card to turn off and switch onto the onboard for power saving. I was wondering if any one new if the HD5970 supported this sense I don't always play games on the pc and don't want a huge video card always running.

I am not too sure why you wanted to do that. My 5970 will switch off the second core and automatically reduced the voltage when idle or while using light applications. It is probably going to be more power saving by having only 5970 on your system.

Modern video cards reduce their speed and power usage when they are not doing intensive 3D

I'd just disable the onboard and use the new card exclusively.

Yes i know they reduce their speed and power usage when not doing much work but the the 5970 still uses a lot of power at idle compared to the on board video witch hardly uses any power thats why ati released hybrid crossfire to lower the power usage at idle. How loud is your 5970 at idle?

put it this way, the fan on my megahalem is louder than the 5970 when idle

Oh ok and thanks. I also found out that it would not work according to this information http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/245454-33-crossfire-faqs it seems that only the HD3470 & HD3450 will work with 785g.

That's silly. I don't always play games either and I have a 5970.
Sometimes I'm reading forums, or doing the accounts or writing invoices.
The card just sits there happily idling..........

Power usage is stuff all, even if you are gaming, worry about electric heaters and clothes dryers, not graphics cards.

Thanks the power consumption does matter a bit but I just didn't want it to sound like an aeroplane while doing basic things lol
