Hi,
I just got given an xbox (original model) - seems to be a 1.2 version from what I worked out.
The HDD is stuffed - just clicks and gave the 07 service required message. Even tried the disk in the freezer trick - no go....

I now know that the BIOS checks the hard drive code against a code in the EEPROM and wont boot unless they match - so I cant just replace the HDD.
Found plenty of tools that let me make another disk (had an old 20GB disk lying around), but of course no go.

Seems a shame to bin it, so....

1) If I get a mod chip I should be able to use pretty much any disk I gather - correct?
2) I see there are still a few places that will sell a mod chip (<$20) - not sure if I can solder well enough to do this - is it easy? WHich chip is a good one?
3) Anyone know any places in Auckland where I can preferably drop it off and get it done - without costing too much?

Many thanks..

I have an original xbox modded with the original 10GB drive and controller with DVD drive intact and only used few times. $45 incl shipping if you are keen.

has XBMC on it which is what I used it for all the time.

let me know as my console is in Hamilton and I will be driving there on Friday so will be able to flick it off to you coming monday.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Thanks for the offer billgates (any relation?).
I was sort of hoping to avoid chucking this one out and seeing what I could do with it.
Am trying to psych myself up to having a go at installing a mod chip myself....

Well if you're going to chuck it out then no harm in trying to solder a modchip in yourself.
My soldering skills are not the best but I managed to do a few original Xbox's in the past.
The duo x2 was the best, cheap one you could get, not sure if they are still available.

If you are correct that yours is a V1.2 then it's pretty easy, unlike the v1.6 which needed extra soldering.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

It's an easy process to mod the xbox yourself, and you can use any drive up to about 500GB I think (maybe bigger if partitioned correctly). You'll need to source the software yourself online though.
