So I upgraded my HDD to one that is 500GB, 7200rpm, and with a bigger cache, hoping it will stop skipping and jerking when using the PlayTV as a PVR.
Anyway, did the restore etc with no problems, but the TVNZ on-demand icon is now missing.
The PlayTV icon is still there on the TV menu.
I have the latest system firmware/software, 3.56.

Any idea how to get the TVNZ on-demand icon back?
I can, of course, still access it via the internet browser, but it's a bit of a hassle, and doesn't work as well, it is jerky and doesn't fit the screen properly.

I think it will come back on its own. I'm not sure exactly what process enables that icon, but it didn't happen with a firmware update. I imagine it's some kind of online activation. Maybe sign in and out of PSN a few times or give it a day or two.

BTW, did the new drive help your PlayTV issues?

I hope it will come back, I read another post on here where someone had it disappear after a hdd upgrade, and then it appeared again a couple of days later. Weird.

Anyway, I haven't had a chance to test PlayTV with the new hdd yet, but I'll post my findings here.

I hope it fixes it, because the freezing/jerking/stuttering was making recordings unwatchable, so much so that you couldn't really say the device was doing what it is purported to do.

Re TVNZ, yes this is an internet connection thing, is your PS3 connected to the net?

That was probably me, I remember I was actually posting on the thread when I looked around and noticed it had come back.

As for the stuttering I'm afraid to say that upgrading my HDD did not improve it at all and if anything it got worse. However since the last update, I have had almost no stuttering. Not sure if it was the update or not though. My only advice is if you have live buffering always on turn it to only when paused, while the stuttering was unbearable I found this helped quite a bit. Good luck.

Yeah, it's always connected to the net when it's on. Will see what happens.

Thanks for the tip about delayed play, I'd had it set to always. I'll see if that helps.
At present I have the ps3 set up where there is no aerial, so can't check for a few days.

I wonder if the PlayTV problem is only with the ps3 slim due to the laptop hdds they use?

Nope, well, maybe depending on your question.  When I first got PlayTV it seemed to work OK (Original 60GB) but I didn't use it for very long before upgrading to 500GB, which caused stuttering etc.  I can't say for sure that I had no problems with my 60GB.

I've heard even stock hard drives in the slims are having issues, which is pretty annoying.

Hobchild, you reckon the last update fixed it up a bit?

Yep nothing to do with slim vs large. I had huge stuttering problems on my fat 40Gb console. As above, didn't take too much attention to begin with and upgraded to 500Gb WD drive early on. About the only common thread seemed to be the larger 500Gb drive size.

Difficult to pinpoint as Sony does not give a screen that shows signal strength AND signal quality. So some issues could be signal related, but most of us with issues had other freeview set top boxes etc to compare with and had no issue/good signal quality on those units.

Yes, let us know how you get on with your faster drive too please. Unfortunately others didn't appear to solve their issues with the faster 7200 drives though....

I have the original 60gb ps3 as well, and it too uses laptop HDD's so it can't be that. As for the update improving things, I can't be sure as I just kinda noticed that it had stopped when I watched a whole movie without a single stutter. It wasn't long after the last update so I kind of figured it might have been that.

Another thing that happened around that time was PlayTV decided to have a complete meltdown forcing me to reinstall it again. Reinstalling maybe could have fixed the problem but I have my doubts as I seem to remember it still stuttering quite badly. But maybe worth a shot if you've got the patience.
