Hello guys,
I've been having really big troubles when it comes to hosting games.
When ever I host a game, no matter what game, Left 4 Dead 2, Killing Floor, Call of Duty 4, and more, my IP is always my LAN Ip (192.Xxxxxx). So no one can join!
I really want to host my own servers with my own rules, and also host custom maps.

I did host an internet server, i even did all the settings. Even my cousin, who lives in the same country, New Zealand, hosted a Killing Floor server, and it was online. All he did was double click the map, and there. It hosted an online server. So I tried that, I did exactly what he did, and no one could join it except my brother, who lives in the same house as me. He can only find it on LAN, not Internet and Friends.

This is really frustrating, and I need you guys help please.
My cousin has a thomson router, and I also have a thomson router. He never foward ports. He has the same ISP as me, which is Telecom NZ.

I am using a wired connection. And guys, please don't post all this Port Foward stuff. It doesn't work for me! I even tried!
I'm with TELECOM NZ, and have a THOMSON router.
If you need anymore information, please ask.

I would really appreciate it if you try to help.

Turn on DMZ in your router for a quick fix. Then give your WAN IP to your mates.

Support a locally made Linux based Operating System, try Linux Lite.

How do I turn on DMZ? and I do not want to give out my IP. I just want people to connect. I want it to be public! Just like my cousins.

Then as your hosting your game tell people what your server is called, make sure you have listed the games master servers (depending on what game your hosting) in your server config file. If you're not sure how to do any of this you really need to do some homework on hosting games and whats required. There are way to many variables to list here.

To host anything, you need to know how to open up ports on your router and/or firewall.
Or else the internet cannot see your server.

Its not as simple as "Start server"

Also be aware that if you host a server then your data usage will be used a lot more than just you playing on someone elses server. If your connection dosent have a great upload rate, then you'll be limited on how many people can join before it starts giving everyone crap ping times.

For more than 4 people, its not worth trying to host a game yourself. Easier to use a public server or rent one for a cost.

how bout my cousin? He didn't set up anything. All he did was setup a server by just 2 clicks.

Do people now see why IPv6 and killing NAT is a good thing...??? Your average gamer doesn't know/want to care about forwarding ports etc...

Like I said. I already fowarded ports for the games. And still the same.

My cousin, same ISP, Exact same router, and both on wired connection.
He didn't do anything.

You shouldn't need to forward any ports to host a left for dead game.

Exactly what im thinking.... was at a LAN recently and we started playing L4D2 and all of a sudden one of our friends who wasnt at the LAN joined in :)

Yes this is through steam. Only for Killing Floor and Left 4 Dead 2.
But on Call of Duty 4, which is not through steam, I hosted a dedicated, then checked the IP, and it was a LAN Ip.

Well, when I host a dedicated server, the game closes, and then this console opens up. That's the dedicated server thing. So I go into the game, and I tried to look for my game on the Internet tab. But I couldn't find it. Then I went to Local/Lan, and there was my server. I even right clicked, and clicked server info, and then it showed the LAN IP.
same thing goes with killing floor. And my friends couldn't find my server also.

I get this problem with certain games some games I can host a server no problem does it automatically where others it will only show up in Lan. Like for instance 'Rune Halls of Valhalla' I did everything from the tutorial a player put up opened ports, dedicated server etc., even disabled the firewall one time out of desperation but the match still only shows up in Lan. I'll watch this thread hopefully there's a solution for your problem.

Ah if your on a Lan this could be our problem I just did a google and came across this
