Hi, our kids have a Xbox360 and we got them a Kinect for Xmas, this machine we purchased 3yrs ago (Arcade model) so reasonably recent.

I had heard of hardware issues in older machines with the red ring of death, but understood our generation of hardware was better in this regard and until this xmas day this had been the case with no issues at all.

Come Xmas day, kids plug Kinect in (using supplied separate power supply and USB Y adapter and rear USB port) two hours later playing the supplied adventure game, red ring of death, Q3 indication which I understand is general hardware failure.

Anyone else experienced the same, our current situation is that we are up for a $135 service fee.

I plugged a new kinect unit it when it first came out to my old Xbox 360 and it's been going fine without any issues. Perhaps your old arcade model xbox 360 was prone to RRoD but it just needed the CPU to get even more hot/use more juice which prob happened when the kinect was plugged in.

RRoD is still covered for 3 years. Give them a call on their 0508 number and they should service it for free.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Hi Bill, your prognosis is similar to what I suspected, had a phone call with MS, to be honest a most unpleasant experience, basically they are saying (based on serial no's) its a few days over 3yrs as we got it as a xmas present so its $135.

To confirm your warranty date, you can go to myservice.xbox.com and register your product.

Regardless, MS should still be repairing your console for free or at the very least inspecting it for free to cofirm what caused the fault. But you will only have to read my blog to see how willing MS are to help their customers.

Oh no, I ordered a Kinect in the Boxing Day sales and its turning up today, will be plugging it into a 3-4 year old 20GB XBox360, will see how mine goes.

Just an update, have been on the phone to MS yet again and can confirm its out of warranty bya few months, as I recall we purchased in 3-4months ahead of xmas on a sale (as you do). So its $135 to have it looked at.

K14 where did you see $174 units at the Warehouse, went there yesterday in rotovagas $329 is the price for a console only 4Gig unit, staff have no record of them below that in past few weeks.

I had based on $174 decided to just get a new one, but not at $329.

Maybe he was meaning $135 + $174 although that still is not $329??!!

However personally I would go the $329. If you spend the $135 you will get a replacement unit which will have had RROD and been repaired. There is no guarantee that it will not suffer the same fate again.
The new units have a completely different setup and do not seem to suffer the same issue. Maybe you could even return the kinect and get a the kinect bundle?

Did you read the thread I linked to? Bond and Bond had xbox's for $174 in boxind day sale, warehouse will price match that number. Too late now though cause deal ended yesterday.

Sorry didnt get to the thread, on dodgy voda broadband at bach. oh well, looks like we will be getting this old one repaired or ponder the extra for a new unit, the kids have been hassling for disc space so if you add that into the mix the $300odd for a new machine probably makes sense.

I'd just spout the consumer guarantees act. Surely a reasonable time for an xbox to work is longer than 3 years? Or has a precedent been set by small claims court already?
