Well, now that I'm off Xbox Game Pass I've bought a few games for PS5 Pro (some of which are on Game Pass for Xbox... oh well). I buy digital so try to only get discounted ones since I can't on-sell.

  • Expedition 33 Deluxe - 20% discount. Deluxe extras not worth it, so only a small discount from the normal standard edition price. Great reviews, but I'm on the fence so far. Very interesting story, but the gameplay doesn't have me hooked yet.
  • COD Black Ops 6 - 60% discount. Meant to be one of the better solo campaigns of the newer COD games. Enjoying this more than I expected.
  • Hellblade 1 and 2 - 30% and 50% discount respectively. Haven't played either yet, but demos for the 2nd one in particular look good.
  • Death Stranding 2 Deluxe - 45% discount. The first game is in the PS Plus game catalogue (which I'll want to play first) so bought sequel while the price was good.
  • Gran Turismo 7: 25th Anniversary Deluxe - 50% off, so picked it up as always good to have a decent racing game.

That all came to just shy of what a year of Game Pass Ultimate costs, so I'm happy with that.

I am probably more indicative of pc players, I only subscribed 1 month for 20.95 and finished all the games I mentioned in previous comment except E33 and Alien Dark descent. I will likely pay another 20.95 in october when Gears of War releases and finish Halo and E33, Alien DD.

I don’t sub constantly because I don’t need it to play online on PC xbox app and only some games are interesting.

Edit: forgot to ask if Game Pass Ultimate Cloud gaming was any use? With the highest tier you had access to a lot more games and ability to play on more devices.

Also to add to the thread topic, I played Iron Nest Heavy turret simulator during the Steam Next Fest which was quite fun with time pressure in missions. Trying all the demos is another great perk over consoles as demos rarely come out anymore there.

Nah, cloud gaming of no interest to me, if I play it’s at home in front of the TV.

I think I got Aliens: Dark Descent as one of the monthly games on PS5 a while ago, so can give that a go at some point if it’s good. But I suspect the I just bought will last me for months as I don’t spend a great deal of time playing.

I’ll hang onto Series X for any Xbox exclusives I might be interested in.

Sony will stop making disc-based PlayStation games starting 2028.

This doesn't surprise me at all.

I wish I could tell you that this will lead to lower prices since it'll eliminate revenue loss caused by people buying second hand instead of new. I wish I could tell you that - but the gaming industry is no fairy-tale world.

Goodbye offline play. There was outrage when microsoft proposed this for the xbox one, lets hope that happens again with this change and they revert.

Even a key that has your license that you can transfer like nintendo has would be better than PS store only sales

I don't see them walking this back. Their profit margin has to be higher from a digital sale vs physical. People will scream and shout that they won't get a PS6 now, until they go on pre-order and then most of them will be first in the queue.

Even with current physical media, it's not like the old days where you bought the disc and you could play forever because the game and your device never got updates. Heaps of games require day 1 patches, along subsequent patches as bugs are identified. Having the game on disc doesn't guarantee retaining "ownership".

And this is something that needs to be solved if they are to keep putting things for sale in stores. I should be able to take the thing I got from the store, and locate the patches thru any means and apply them to an offline console and play the game.

If its online required, then its not something that should be sold in a retail store. I get why GTA6 is getting it because of problems with leaks, but anything else I buy from a shop should be operable without any online requirement.

I can finally say that I have finished Assassins Creed Odyssey and the Fate of Atlantis DLC after owning it for 6 years and never really getting round to completing it.

In all honesty though, the game was very tedious after the first couple of chapters, made worse by the level grind and the fact they try to sell you xp boosters. It was easier at end-game level with the right stats and build but not being able to do the core of an AC game for most of the starting playtime (which is to assassinate) was a negative.

And then somehow the story (which was the only real thing I was interested in) became really haphazard and uninteresting.

It’s put me off any more of the modern AC games like Valhalla or Shadows because I’m really not keen on slogging through another 80hrs.

I can finally free up 100GB of space on my SSD now and use it for some indie games.

I doubt Sony (or Microsoft, or Nintendo, etc) see this as a problem that needs to be solved. And would Sony even care if they don't sell games in retail stores? Moving to all digital means you'd only be buying a voucher to redeem in the PS Store, with the retail store taking a cut. It makes more financial sense for Sony to make the PS Store the only way to purchase.

Sony is by far the dominant player in the console market, and all the others will likely follow suit - if not immediately then within a couple of years.

Even assuming MS decided to take the opportunity to try to win back market share by keeping physical media, there won't be a massive shift away from PlayStation. And those who did make the switch would then just face the same problem when MS does the same thing, except a bit later.

I don't disagree that it's all a bit shit, but I just don't think enough people care for anything to change.

I'm just getting back into gaming, so didn't even know this was a thing... but I have to say the extended gameplay trailer for Wolverine looks pretty bloody good. "Bloody" being the operative word.
