LookingUp:

The car analogy is very right. As the owner of the vehicle you can do any lawful things with it, including lending it to other people, or give it away for free. ....

As others have said, it's not like a car - your friend didn't actually "own" the software. ?If you want an analogy it's more like a drivers licence - you can't hand that on to someone else when you're finished with it, even though you did pay to get it.

Not sure if that is the case, otherwise games stores wouldn't sell second hand games.

I can't wait for the day when Honda tells me that in there is an EULA when purchasing a car...you can sell the car someday down the road second hand but we (Honda) own the software in the computer of the car and it is none transferable. The new owner must buy a copy from us/Honda or pay a small transfer fee.

Yes... I agree the above statement is ridiculous and so are these EULA's that the software companies keep coming out with....but we're all getting use to it.

I had heard that there are some real estate developments, where the original developer gets paid a commission each time the house is onsold in the future. So if it is sold 5 times over 20 years, they get 5 commissions. Not sure how true it is, but it wouldn't surprise me. If it is true I think that it should be outlawed.

I think some of you are missing the point, regardless how you feel it should be they are quite entitled to do what they and other software developers do, its how they make their money.

Some of the posts are bordering on ridiculous and don't warrant further comment

Oh and going back to the car illustration - when you sell / give away your car you have to pay the LTSA some money to do the transfer.
I do agree though, ideally it would be nice if there was no cost to deactivate your game license to pass the game on to someone else.

jtbthatsme: So what your saying is that you would like to be able to install and play a game owned and registered to someone else for free???

Why would any company want to do that??? What happens when your done with it??? Do you get to pass it it on and have more people install register and play for free??? Hell why not have the original disk passed around your office or school with another 5, 10, 100, 1000 people install and play for free???

You do realise they are a business right??? They have to be able to make money and your idea of pass it on and let anyone with a genuine disk and key install it for free when your done with it doesn't really fit that business model lol.

Yes, and everytime a friend borrows your car they should be made to pay the manufacturer for the privilege of doing so.

There are so many things wrong with your statement.

Azzura: Why shouldn't he be able to play it. As long as the key is only currently being used/played by him...whats the problem?

He didn't pirate it, he is playing with a legit key. I should say...he is trying to play with a legit key.

My car is owned and registered to me....I can lend it to anyone I want...I just have to give them the key. It would seem pretty crazy to think if Honda had a sign on the dash that read - sorry the car is registered to someone else...you must buy your own Honda (or w/e) car.

Lol what a ridiculous comparison.

Comparing a car to a software licence makes no sense, they are simply not the same thing. If you can't follow this its not worth arguing.

This is totally normal. In fact it's almost unheard of these days to have a game that the product key can be used anywhere you like. Almost all product keys attach to an account, after that the key is effectively useless. Want to use the game elsewhere? Login to the account.

PC games are no longer the $99 buy disc in box off the shelf items. I can now buy a licence to a game for cheap as (maybe a tad over half that price on release and maybe $20 or so if it's a bit older) on a service like Steam or origin, download it in an hour or two and be able to use it on any computer that I login to.
These days the disc is simply a medium of giving you the content easily instead of downloading it, and the product key as mentioned is like a redemption code.

The last time I bought a physical game would be.... 2007? Maybe 2008 at best?

eXDee I think they can't see the difference or don't want to, for it its perfectly simple and have understood it for years.

What would be the point of having a company develop software that can be pirated by others by simply having the key, in this case its being justified as a"friend "gave it too him, much the same as passing it around the game forums.

I suppose their logic would also apply to downloading music they haven't paid for or one pays and all thier mates entitled to it as they are only giving it not selling it.

I'm struggling to see what's wrong with me asking how and why this guy can't see the difference between car OWNership and a single user licence for software that's been used once already.  I think maybe you've quoted the wrong person lol otherwise are you saying you disagree that they're a business trying to make money and that anyone should be able to use a single use licence as many times as they like as long as two people are not using it at the same time.

That's the main reason EA (and others) have started doing this. It's a strategy to suppress the second hand gaming market.

I am surprised to see people here on Geekzone are actually okay with this whole 'single use license' crap.

Back in the days, before Internet, when you buy a book, you own that book. You buy a CD, you own that CD. You buy a piece of computer software, you own that piece of software. You could lend it, sell it as second hand or burn it in your fireplace. It's yours, you paid for it, you have the rights to decide what to do with it.

Then there's the Internet. All of sudden corporate overlords realized that they can restrict access to their product by using this wonderful web thingy. Great! Let's make sure anybody and everybody who wants to enjoy our entertainment pay for it!

To justify it, they spent years to market this whole 'single use license' scheme to consumers. And it seems to be working for some people like YOU. So now when you buy a piece of software, you no longer have the ownership. You spent your hard earned cash on a narrowly defined license (and it's up to the corporate themselves to define said license). And you are supposed to be happy with it!

Want to pass your purchased games to your friends? Want to sell it for some cash? Think of the developers! You filthy thief! You wouldn't steal a TV, would you?!

As if book/music/movie/gaming industry never existed/were piss poor before the age of Internet and intrusive DRM.

Let's not put lipstick on a pig. This is corporate stripping your consumer rights so they can grab more money. For thousands of years, people get ownership of the stuff they have paid for. I guess it's no longer true because corporates said no and they got people like you to support them.

Wait for the day when your coffee mug is connected to the Internet and only licensed to be used by you. You know, for your own (hygienic) good.
