It depends how much of "girlie girl" they are. The g/f for a start would have little interest in playing any games where the principal objective is to kill lots of things. In my mind females are likely to be less interested in games of a violent nature, and possibly even of a technical nature (simulators etc) as they're too "geeky". I'm not claiming that this is an all-encompassing profile, just playing the odds.

I grabbed 2 copies of Lara Croft:GOL on the steam sale for something like $3.50 and somewhat to my surprise the mrs is really enjoying it; We looked over the games on sale initially and she played the original tomb raider so was willing to give one of the more modern ones a go, which happened to be on the flash sale.

It plays a bit like a diablo clone, but with some interesting co-op mode features. The only issue she's having is that, after playing nothing but the occasional Sims game for the last 10 years, WASD is a completely foreign concept.

As a long time gamer it always surprises me how much trouble non-gamers can have picking it up. She tends to hold the left hand in the WASD position, but only uses it for tab, space and left-CTRL... then when she needs to move around swaps the mouse hand onto the arrow keys... then when needs to shoot swaps it back to the mouse. Makes progress quite slow, but TBH it's more frustrating for me when watching her play. Still she seems to be having fun without the sims :)

sidefx: but TBH it's more frustrating for me when watching her play.

I have to leave the room when my wife plays on the xbox...

Ooh, ooh, ooh!!! Methinks you need to get out more and perhaps meet a few female geeks. FWIW, I know some very "girlie girls" who love nothing more than playing a really badass killing machine. I do too, for that matter. Gaming is one area where there are no rules.

The way I see it gaming is bigger than the Movie industry for the simple reason that it can take the escapism of a movie a step further by putting you in it. Male or Female it' not really gender biassed in that aspect and although sure there are plenty of steroetypes used that can be seen as not Female friendly but that's what so great about it we are not all created the same and we all don't necessarily see that as a bad thing.

Like I said previously my daughter plays Halo & Forza Racing a lot more than she plays her Dance Central dare I say it I probably have a greater desire to play the latter (please note I said desire not actually do play it lol I've only played with her).

Each to their own some like Kinect some don't, some play FPS's or RPG's it's about enjoying it as when you stop doing that then you should stop playing. I used to call myself a die hard RPG fan there was nothing like sinking myself into one but then along came Halo Reach and I can probably say I have spent more time playing that game than all RPG's put together since it launched (I am cranking up hours at the moment in Dead Island and loving it funnily enough I am a girl in the game). I have over 70 games ranging from Kinect titles like Disneyland Adventures to Lego games, Zombie games to Racing games, Once Upon a Monster to Saints Row 3 I enjoy them all for different reasons (such as Lego games are fun as I get to enjoy them with my sons, Halo is fun I get to play with my daughter and other online friends).

Your friend as stated here before will have things they like and things they don't experiment and find out what they enjoy and you too may find some new gems to waste hours / days on.

my mates wive plays Battlefield 3, she hadn't touch a game in her 35 yrs but after seeing us one night having fun playing multi player she ask to have go and that was the end of that, they use to argue about the bills now they argue over who gets to play the game first when they get home.

My wife isn't what I'd call a hardcore gamer, but she loves Ratchet and Clank on our PS3. In general she tends to gravitate towards platformers, with Rayman Origins being another favourite of hers.

Portal 2 may be another good one. You could both have fun playing the co-op levels together.

There is one game i think every woman would enjoy playing through, its actually not a game but more an exploration round an island while listening to poetry. Its called Dear Esther and can be found on steam, created by the modding community and is very well done. You can watch a walk through on You tube. But its best to experience it yourself. A bit on the short side as well.
