zyo: So if I can't return the product to the retailer because maybe the shop has gone bust I will have to bear all the extra shipping cost of getting it repaired?

I recently imported a laptop from Sony US and the webcam was broken, Sony repaired at one of their service centers in NZ (service plus, google it) free of charge and they have to import parts from Singapore because the model is different.

Microsoft could be a bit more customer friendly in this case.

It is the reason you buy from good quality retailer.

I've had to claim warranty on a few consoles due to the RROD.
When you action the claim they email you a pre-paid postage label that you print out.
All you have to do is provide a box. The last time I did this they even sent the courier to my house.
With the original ring they used to send you a refurbed xbox and extend the warranty.
I had the new form of RROD happen to my slim after around 6 months of ownership.
Its exactly the same error but no longer has a red ring.
When I sent that back they sent me a brand new xbox, not a refurbed one but did not give any extra warranty.
I found this rather annoying as I only had 6 months left in the original warranty and it could of happened again.
Luckily it hasnt.

If they replaced it after just 6 months, then it should have still had 6 months remaining on the warranty, as the original you purchased was sold with a 12 month warranty. They can't then subcontract out of that with a replacement unit. But it is kind of moot anyway, as you would be covered by the CGA if it was a manufacturing problem.

I think you missunderstood.
There was no extended warranty offered as with the original red ring.
So after getting a replacement, I was given the remaining six months warranty.
That irked me because if the new one only lasted 6 months like the previous one then It wouldnt be under warranty.

At the end of that all that matters is if you have had a decent service life off your first purchase or not, despite what some consumer advocate organizations may keep spouting there is no automatic resetting of warranty even if you are given a brand new item as a replacement.

Infact, if you have some form of extended warranty covers the settlement by a total replacement is the end of the policy and if you want more cover you have to purchase a new policy on your new item.
