Whoaaa... That's real harsh. I thought Australia had it bad. I didn't realise games in NZ costed so damn much!

Oh, for those who haven't worked it out too - if you set your region to US for voice etc, you lose the ability to use Xbox Music, as it will demand that your console region be set to NZ like your Live account.  Drives me mental.

you can switch your xbox live account to another region now.  you may lose stuff in doing so though, so be warned and read through before attempting... http://support.xbox.com/en-US/my-account/manage-account/change-region

note: i'm not recommending you do this, just suggesting its possible...

Are you using any much of the media functionality? I'd love to know a bit more about what you doing with sky. I also heard you need a music pass subscription to stream music and an Xbox gold subscription to use other media bits like Netflix and even Internet Explorer. Is that true?

Indeed.  But one of the things you lose is... your Music Pass subscription undecided

TV functionality (other than "dumb passthrough") doesn't work outside the US, so it does nothing at all with Sky.  You do need a music pass subscription to stream music, and local streaming hasn't been implemented yet (apart from as a DLNA Play To receiver).  Xbox Live Gold is required to use Netflix/Hulu/Internet Explorer/Xbox Music Pass as well, like you say.

That's such a bummer! Apple seem to do a much better job of localisation. Microsoft take way too long, windows phone for example is also still lacking in that department.

Pretty disappointing such basic features require a subscription. So you have to pay a subscription to use an app that requires a subscription. Pretty weird choice by MS...

it's a shame that 3D support has not been added yet. My 3D Blu Ray player spat the dummy over the weekend and is being repair courtesy of Harvey Norman.

The General Blu ray performance on the console is good though.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

yeah, I lost mine - two days after I had paid... but it was only $10 or so, so didn't bother me.  I just bought a new US sub after the move.

Took mine back after having weekly updates that would take 4+ Hours to complete (4-5G each files plus install time). Because I only used it a couple times a week at best it was unbearable. Did this for 3 months before i took it back.

Its a shame because I quite liked everything else.

Bad timing actually whitecd. the latest update enabled the ability for the console to perform an update while in standby mode, and return to standby mode - no more waiting for installs.

Coming only recently to the party, is there any updated eta as to when the voice function will be available in NZ

I'm not sure MS know there is even an issue  - not that I have been looking, but I can't say I have seen any form of response from MS in any of the forums saying that they plan to resolve it.  For me, getting voice working is probably the main thing for me.

Continuing on the trend of Microsoft's back peddling...

Microsoft offers a Kinect free Xbox One for $399USD

http://majornelson.com/2014/05/13/delivering-more-choices-for-fans/

What does this mean for new customers?  There will be a cheaper Xbox option that is priced very close to the PS4, missing Kinect..

What does this mean for existing customers?  Your Kinect you purchased will probably not be ever utilised in any upcoming AAA games, or just even more half arsed than it already is.
