Alt-Tabbing while you have an foreground application producing full screen high-resolution graphics and 3D live polygon rendering, straight back to a measley 2D rendered desktop (potentially of different colour depth and resolution) can be quite a lot of stress.

And finding the culprit could be as simple as differences in resolutions, to acceleration support in the driver version.

One method I use to do to get around it was switch into a standard low-res menu or bring up the old console screen before switching out. Ensuring there was no live rendering occurring at the time. Lessens the chance of the OS swapfile etc having a sudden hernia as resource allocations change.

PSU - say no more.

Upgrade to a decent PSU. I had similar problems and have upgraded mine to this:

SILVERSTONE Strider Gold ST1200-G 1200W ATX 12V v2.3 / EPS 12V 80 PLUS GOLD Certified 100% Modular, Active PFC Power Supply

Never looked back.

Cheers guys, would look into the PSU. Do you think that fluctuating power from the PSU would qualify for it to be returned under warranty?

Depends on the load.
If it's browning out because it's being used beyond it's rated capacity, no.

I would think so yes. Your GPU specifies 600w and you have every right to expect your system to be able to run nicely on a 650w PSU.
