What would the equivalent Radeon card be to the 960? Is there one?
Apparently a 280 or 285.
Current Nvidia to Radeon roughly plays out like this, just imagine the radeon a little bit slower than each geforce but it's made up by each radeon being a bit cheaper than each geforce:

Basically nvidia is the safer bet in the current generation lower power and heat but often overpriced locally.
The GTX 950 or R7 370 will probably be fine given it sounds like he has a small screen resolution? I would go GTX 950 personally at the moment I think for screen smaller than 1920x1080.
