tstone: Works sweet. Watching Top Gear in hi-def sure beats standard def!

Working sweee-eet for me too.  Installed latest firmware... tested with some TV programs/ movies that I downloaded recently - all good!

Where can one get HD Divx files?  Or is that not talked about here?

I can't find any details on what is supported and what isn't (i.e. what resolutions and bitrates).  And no subtitles yet, right?

You can get some good sample videos from Stage6, theres also the odd full movie uploaded in 720p if your quick enough to grab it :)  I have an xbox360 and havnt had any problems with the divx playback, its played everything ive throwen at it.
However the ps3 and xbox360 will only play divx5 and up.. any old divx3 content you have wont play (something to do with mp4, im not sure what tho lol). And no your mkv videos will not play and im pretty sure subtitles arnt supported (dnt quote me on that though)

Wrong...the PS3 is fully 'certified' by DivX from DivX3 and up whereas the XBOX only plays from DivX 5 and up. Also DivX is fully 'integrated' into PS3 but the XBOX only plays DivX movies. What this means is that any content provider can produce content containing DivX and the PS3 will natively decode it.

I think the PS3 has official DivX support whereas the 360 does not?

Xbox officialy supports divx, if they didnt get a license they would be in for some major litigation problems, considering all over the xbox.com site etc it says its plays divx files (divx is copyrighted company name), and not just that it plays mp4sp.
It was rushed to beat the ps3's playback, so it dosnt support some of the intricicies of divx (that no one uses anyway! if your still encoding or downloading videos with divx3 then you need to upgrade!) i suspect this will all be remedied in the next couple of months anyway. But as stated earlier it plays back everything ive tried without a problem.

maybe he was just meaning the polar race special which was HD. in any case i can't wait for top gear to go HD, it is a lot more deserving than most american filth coming out in HD at the moment.

I've been pondering a ps3 for awhile now. definately seems to be a step ahead of the xbox with most things. blu-ray, bluetooth, controllers rechargable straight out-of-box, its HiDef DVD player isn't seperated from the console! the key words with xbox360 is "Sold Seperately." The amount of games on the xbox obviously dwarfs the ps3 - but that won't be the case for long. plus buying a console will not change the fact that i am a pc gamer and most 360 games are on pc aswell if they're not on ps3 which means ps3 makes a better combo with a pc than a xbox does. alot of people keep complaining about the price of the ps3 but i already decided as soon as the 60GB was axed and the 40GB introduced here that when i get a ps3 it will be second-hand. there are numerous reasons for this:

1) i can get an extra 20GBs with a 60GB version which is no longer avaliable anywhere, atleast not the NZ version anyway (i have tried stores and pricespy with no luck)
2) it will have backwards compatibility
3) it will have 4 usb ports not 2
4) it will have multiple memory ports
4) it will work out cheaper than buying a brand new 40GB.

now i know people will be saying "but second-hand means no warranty" but i mean really, the ps3 has the same 1-year standard warranty the xbox does but without the problems the xbox does. sure if i was buying an xbox there is no way in hell i would buy second-hand therefore voiding  (let alone an extended one) but i believe the ps3 build quality is better for a few reasons: it was made later than the 360, it was released long b4 it hit nz shores and i believe sony build quality will always be better than microsoft build quality. anyway the ps3 looks nicer (the xbox elite tho does look puuuurtty)

I was wrong and I was so embarassed that I didn't want to reply. But I did enjoy the Polar Special! Wasn't Sir Edmund Hillary the first person in the world to drive to the South Pole? Even if he wasn't, just compare the gear they use today to that they used way back then.

dnb4life I am sure you won't regret this line of thought. If you were to buy (don't be mistaken - I ain't selling!) my 60 GB machine then you would be buying a machine that has been problem free since first use on NZ release day.

Top Gear drove to the North Pole not the South Pole. The only reported problems with ps3s have been single machines with unfamiliar problems unlike the xbox which has had whole lines of their 360s suffer the exact same problem (bad build quality/lack of experience in consoles). there have been some vicious rumours spread about ps3s overheating but turns out its just xbox fanboys spreading bs. sure the ps3 does get hot, hotter if you don't keep it in the right enviroment but that goes for all next gen consoles and atleast its not failing on a massive level like the 360 is.

my flatmate got the 3 red lights of death and had to send his xbox away and it took ages. like agggggessss. and when he got it back he was stoaked that he got a free months subscription for xbox online. but as i pointed out to him, 1 month costs $10 to buy (and thats for the consumer, imagine how much it actually costs them to give u a months membership, 2 cents maybe?) now is it just me or is that a pretty pathetic consulation for having to call up, get put on hold, send away your xbox and then have to wait for weeks and weeks to get it back?

"What's that? - ps3 is free for online?"
