billgates: The tuners works in NZ but you just don't get any official EPG.

Freeview NZ never released a full EPG via EIT data on the terrestrial service, like they do on the satellite service.
It's limited to now and next events.

There was all the talk of how MHEG5 was the way of the future, but it just limited us in NZ.
Sony's PlayTV for the PS3 etc falls into the same bracket, where they have to supply a completely separate EPG to make it work, similar to TIVO.

That changed recently and the now use huffman compression on their EIT data and provide around 7 days.

How recent was this change? I set up Windows Media Centre using dual DVB-T tuners 2 weeks ago (on Windows 10) and only got "now and next" in the EPG.  On my previous WMC builds I have always had to resort to using a DVB-S card to get the 7 day EPG.

Do you have a link to this information? Or more details such as compatibility?

Keen for more info also...

EPG is not supported for NZ yet, hence why the TV tuner is not 'officially' released here. It will tell you what's currently showing on the channel you're watching and the next programme tho.

MS could still enable the tv tuner for NZ region, even if the EPG is not fully working

Yeah, no news to share at this point on enabling the TV Tuner sorry.  As others have mentioned, there are hacks/workarounds to make it show channels.  As soon as that changes you can bet i'll post here!

Freeview did enable Huffman EIT - but to legally decode and consume that you need to both have a license, and your software needs to support it in-box.

well, since freeview is, well free, shouldn't that license to decode also be free?

MHEG5 EPG has associated costs also from memory.
It's not free all round by any means.
Nor accessible to all devices neither, as we still see today.

Who do we make our voices heard to, to see if we can get a useful update as to timing? It's been out 2 years and we are still the poor cousins.

If my Xbox One had this functionality, it would be one reason to use it. Now it sits gathering dust, except for the occasional time I buy exclusive titles.

From the sound of things, the hardware is available, the software probably is available, but what about the agreements from the broadcasters (Sky, TVNZ etc) and the EPG people?  If it is the latter, who is responsible for driving it and to provide the people resources to make it happen -  Microsoft NZ or Microsoft US?

just my thoughts.

Yes. But even if it was, there is probably an extensive testing regime to ensure that the unit you are trying to get licensed has been thoroughly and robustly crippled to meet Freeview NZ's requirements before they will issue it.

So I just found out that live TV worked for me after setting my Xbox to NZ region.

I usually have it set to the UK in order to use the TV functionality, but had to change it to watch a movie rented from film & TV app. Tried the one guide and was surprised that it worked! Have restarted the Xbox since and it still works, just doesn't go straight to live TV tho. Hopefully it's not a one off.

Am pretty happy it works, as I rent a few movies from time to time so it was getting a bit annoying having to switch regions all the time..

Now all I need is for the EPG to work..

Auckland based.  Turned my xbox on this morning and it's still working, even went straight to tv on start up.  Location set to NZ, Language set to English UK.

TV was originally set up using a location in UK with a postcode in Liverpool.  Not sure if that would have anything to do with it..

Is it working for anyone else?
