I only have experience of the Windows games. Don't know what else there is. There are a number of free and non-free chess games in circulation, but in my experience, most of the free ones are buggy and not worth the trouble. Unusually, the Microsoft one is far and away better than anything comparable and it is incomprehensible that they dumped it after Vista. A problem I have found with most games is they either don't work well, or they assume everyone aspires to be a grandmaster. Serious players will undoubtedly sneer at Microsoft chess, but it looks good, works well, is solid, and can be set for various levels of play. I love that it lets you take moves back so you can try different variations. It is by far the best free chess game I have found and I keep it on all my computers.
