Thanks for the input everyone. Gonna check out those builds this morning and see how much $$'s they come too.

Just for comparisons sake - if I was cheeky and asked the same questions of laptops - what would everyone say?  Any consensus on top brand / chip?

However, as @sidefx said in terms of pure computing power, you'll get a lot less from a laptop of similar price.

 

I would recommend a laptop only if you value the portability, and put in favour of performance capabilities in your priority.

Just look for full HD screen, and a 940m or above graphics chip.  SSD preferable. 

 

This would be a decent laptop in that case, for $1500.
