As above.

Hardware is capable, software of stock media player app is not. Enter VLC player Xbox app to save the day on that one.

I have other means of using Spotify. PS3 has Spotify app built in anyway, so that's a weird omission for the Xbox one.

Sounds like plex may be paid for console use? Am totally not interested if that is the case, for my requirements.

Sounds like cinivia protection exists via the optical drive, but maybe not via direct file play via network/USB drive.
That will be for stock media player app. VLC or plex may behave differently as above.

Getting info on this, that is current especially, is not easy and requires first hand experience.

Nope, no KODI port for xbox one... I think there were rumblings of one but nothing has come of it.

Bahaha, found this while searching for "kodi on xbox one" just now:

that's just cheating :p  (Although the geek in me wants to try it....)

I have to say Plex on Xbone is fantastic, it will probably replace Kodi here (high WAF).. Also fantastic is the IR blaster so you can control tv power and amp volume from the Xbox media remote. Also TVNZ app and 3Now through the browser. It's a great media box. Oh and you can plug anything into the HDMI in, including a Chromecast so you can get Spotify/Google Play.

Yeah exactly, that's why I say it's cheating to call that "how to install kodi on xbone".

I too am really liking PLEX, but I must say the options for filtering and searching feel quite limited compared to Kodi.

Just to revisit this.  Yes, Harmony support is seamless on the Xbox.  Very very good.  Awesome actually.

And yes, via VLC Player I can directly play the HEVC/H.265 files directly from a networked/shared folder WITHOUT the need to first transcode.  Sweet, as.
