However, if you own the disc, this would never apply.

It really does seem to me that downloaded games should cost at least 25% less than a disc since you are only buying the right to play which is untransferable, rather than the right to play which transfers with the disc when you sell it.

Either that or the download should come with all the additional DLC free forever to make up for the fact that you can't sell it.

but you have to look at it from JB Hifi, eb games perspective etc.  if these places are selling games for 25% more, theyre going to struggle.  these places close down or stop selling games, they will stop selling consoles too.  so yeah, I get why its more expensive to keep your distributors happy.

would like them to be cheaper, or for them to sell digital codes for games.  a scratch card or something like they do with gift cards/memberships etc.

Why do I? The profitability of bricks and mortar shops is not relevant to the issue - we should not be paying a subsidy to keep them open.

we're not paying to keep them open, Sony/Xbox wants to keep them open.  They need to have their consoles sold.  They would only really stay open if they get enough business, if they get priced out of the market, then they will close, then the only option to buy a console would be online, which isn't ideal for most.

so its understandable why digital games are priced this way.  I dont agree with it, but I understand it.

When I purchased my Xbox One I received a downloaded token for one game, two physical games and purchased another physical game.

After installing the first game via disk, the next game I purchased was digital .. since then I have re-purchased the physical games as digital and all of my games are digital.

I do not pay RRP for any games - most have come direct from Microsoft on sale, while a handful have come from "marketplaces" around the world

I do have the benefit of having a Unlimited Gigabit Fibre so speed and cap have not been an issue (first month of ownership - over 700GB in downloading games/updates etc)

Is there actually anything on the disk other than a digital key?  I thought all games were "downloaded" regardless of where you buy the key from.  At least that's my understanding from the Xbox side of things and just assumed Playstation would be the same.  The concept of "owning" digital data is all but obsolete, we are all renters now.

Pretty sure for Xbox One the full game is on the disc. However, most games will need an update before they can be played. So instead of downloading 50GB, 45GB will be installed from disc and then 5GB will be downloaded and installed.

Download sounds ideal if you have unlimited broadband.

Assume it starts on the Xbox One without requiring you to insert the disk to provide evidence that you own it.

Surely a benefit to digital download would be faster load times yeah? Especially if you've installed an SSD into your console

Personally I upgrade my HDD whenever I run out of space. Saves having to lug around a ton of discs to a mates place. It also makes moving houses easier too!

But, having a physical copy of the disc is good. If you're not a hoarder with games like I am then buy the disc, you'll always be able to resell it to someone else

E.g I bought no man's sky on disc because of the amount of mixed reviews. Lucky I did cause I can palm it off to somebody else.

At least on PS4, the games are still fully installed and don't actually run from the (slow) Blu-ray drive.
