i totally agree, i'm not really a hardcore gamer though, so i just want it on the network for PS store/browsing/updates etc

...though, even when i get it online i still cant access the signup for PSNetwork... some 8001000**** error always pops up.

NZtechfreak: halfbaked - do you mean to say that the backwards compatibility of the 60GB model has been increased over time? Thats fantastic news, guess I will have to look for one of those on trademe then when it comes time to purchase (they seem to be plentiful there).

The original 20GB and 60GB PlayStation 3s included both the PS2's "Emotion Engine" CPU and its "Graphics Synthesizer" GPU. The 80GB ditched the Emotion Engine in favor of software emulation, but kept the Graphics Synthesizer. The 40GB lost the Graphics Synthesizer as well, hence no PS2 backward compatibility at all. This is the US situation. THe first European model was like the 80GB US one - no emotion engine.

I have a US 60G model but have never tried a PS2 title in it - don't have any. But would like to find out since there are some pretty cheap PS2 games out there that the kids would be quite happy with.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

I have NZ 60GB model.. Played my bros copy of GT4/PS2  on my PS3..
Was very bad compared to the PS2...

Video was skippy... Graphics were very bad..  eveything else seemed the same..

Game played so bad we went back to his place and played it on his PS2/Slim

(in other words)

Got PS2 games.. play them on a PS2

My Brother has a 60GB English PS3, and it plays GT4 PS2 version pretty slick, no problems with video or sound.
