I wouldn't imagine there's any hardware differences for us. Wouldn't it only be the software/firmware? I'll be getting the UK model on release, so hopefully it will work.

Those who are hoping for HD recording of PlayTV might want to reconsider the halo-greatness of its preproduction introduction by Sony... it seems that Sony has pulled back some of their promises...

* Most noticable is no HD recording (for now)
* recording ARE NOT transferrable
* streaming of recorded content is possible to PSP via Remote Play

That's cool. I would settle for SD recording in the short term. I think it was always inevitable that the transfer thing would get removed. I mean, what were they thinking? Wonder how long we'll have to wait for HD recording (if it ever eventuates). Are there HD DVB-T broadcasts in the rest of Europe? Maybe the fact that HD is not available in UK (main launch market?) is the reason they haven't worried too much about it.

You could be right Bazzer, if there are no HD DVB-T broadcasts in Europe (I don't think there are in the UK at least) then that means no HD recording. It doesn't necessarily mean it can't record HD... or maybe thats just wishful thinking. Anyway, with no NZ release it's a redundant issue.

It's only good for PAL UK/European PS3.

Technical Details:
Region
PAL: Will play on UK and European Playstation3 only

Beside, it may most likely need a region specific firmware update to enable the decoding. And UK/Europe uses MPEG2 and NZ uses MPEG4...

So after the endless delays all the benefits of PlayTV are now being removed. No ability to record HD (initially). Any confirmation that this will be the case for NZ?

Looks like I am in the market for something else now (like Zinwell, extraTerrestrial etc.). Thanks Sony!

I'm sure they're only differentiating between US and Euro PS3s. We have PAL too, so even though there's different model numbers, I doubt the hardware is different. I also doubt they'll issue region specific firmware, they haven't so far (last I checked, anyway) so it would be unlikely they'd start on that track just for PlayTV. More likely it simply wouldn't work until a firmware update closer to the release here, but it might work and that's good enough for me. I don't think we'll see NZ/Aus specific hardware and/or firmware. Probably the market is too small for them to bother. And isn't NZ standard different to Aus standard anyway?

I had hopes of using this also but won't be now because

1. I have a US PS3 so it looks like it won't work anyway
2. No HD recording

I achieve HD recording using a USB DVB-T tuner now and the content recorded is DRM free etc. So the PS3 can stay as a console for me

Have you had any luck (or even tried) getting your recordings to play on the PS3? Is it possible? I managed to play a HD MPEG2 TS on it with minimal fuss, haven't really tried our stuff yet. Have you?

I think I read somewhere, that it upscales to HD - you wouldnt want it recording in HD anyway the 40GB HDD wouldnt last long

Have you had any luck (or even tried) getting your recordings to play on the PS3? Is it possible? I managed to play a HD MPEG2 TS on it with minimal fuss, haven't really tried our stuff yet. Have you?

No problem. Just run tsremux to convert the .ts streams to .m2ts. The PS3 plays them fine after that.

I have been converting my HD captures to .m2ts and burning them to DVD to play on the PS3 so I don't clutter my HD space.

We don't know that PlayTV for NZ won't record HD. I gather the British version will not support DVB-T2 which is what their HD terrestrial will be using. As we use DVB-T for HD it may not be an issue.

My interest in PlayTV is more about integration into the PS3 and the possibility of a superior interface to something like a buggy My Sky system.
