MKV is M4V? I am starting my conversion from Divx/Xvid movies to M4V universal so I can have option to play on iPod Touch/Apple TV (future proofing)...

Oh. I have found more solid info about Final Fantasy XIII... it is in fact true as Bradley said... FFXIII is still exclusive for PS3 in Japan ONLY, and else where it will be released in Xbox360. Sort of the similar development for all FF titles anyway, that Japan gets the first cut, and the developer translate it into English NTSC then PAL version at almost a year later... as to if it will be in multiple discs, that have not been much of a worry for me anyhow, in the old days with PS1, FF has always been in multiple CDs, so meh. Not much to add, the PS3 does play nicely with the mac. I use mine mostly for playing media(kids play games on it)

Don't think so, MKV is the container that most HD videos are coming in nowadays. Contains x264 video afaik. Xbox won't play it, but neither will PS3 I think. That's not to say MS won't release support for these growing formats in the future. I mean this time last year you couldn't even play most divx files on the Xbox. Now look where we are :)

As a streaming device my Xbox is great. I can access my iMac libraries, Macbook libraries, HTPC and Toshiba laptop using Connect360 for the Macs, and Media Player 11 for the Windows boxes. It's great for that kinda thing.

Sounds so far Xbox360 is worth getting for games and general media streaming... but the ultimate test is, to BluRay or not... We have big collections of DVDs... and in no time shall we be upgrading them to BluRay... And I don't we have any BluRay titles yet, and most videos we're watching are from download. I guess this is bringing the decision ball more towards Xbox360 eh?

Am I right to think that way?

I think you are on the right track as I also beleive that downloads are the future trend. Blue Ray is a nice to have and for me it isn't worth upgrading from DVD.

I'm pretty sure PS3 has the exclusive worldwide for the re-release of FF7 with updated graphics (similar to advent children). Also holding out for Tekken PS3 and Killzone 2. xbox360 definately has the online aspects and the game library but thats not enough for me. I've got my PC for online gaming and gaming in general after all, which blows both consoles outa the water.

I find there's all these extras with xbox360 which end up costing a fortune, extras that if i ended up buying the 360, would be very neccesary. PS3 utterly destroys the xbox360 for playing media though imho.

Your forgetting the PS3 ability to upscale video, it brings a whole new lease of life to your movie collection. PS3 will play H.264

I'm not sure if this has changed with the "big" 360 upgrade, but PS3 had much more current DivX codecs which were regularly updated.

For media streaming, my PS3 does very well. I use TwonkyVision as the media server on my PC and don't have to worry about transcoding or such waffle. My vids appear on my XMB and play seamlessly (upscaled and through wirelessG).

One thing I would suggest... go to a games shop and try the controllers in action. I originally thought I liked the 360 controllers but once I got my hands on the PS3 ones... mucho happiness.

Of course, you could always rent for a weekend from a video store to see which you like... then you can make your decision based on your own experience as I reckon you'll struggle to find impartial advice.

I have rented all consoles and which we ended buying Wii 3 years ago. We like PS3 for BluRay as I didn't bother with the games (wasn't much title that gets my taste)... and I like Xbox360 for the games it has. Which is why the dilemma and the query here.

I'm not a fan of using a console as a media center - unless you can throw some decent storage into it. Having a HTPC is a far better and more flexible option IMO. Yes I know you can stream from other devices but the average consumer has no clue how to do that. I'd like to think that the next-gen consoles will get it right and offer TV tuners and a decent amount of storage as there is no reason that it can't also have MySky type functionality. Sony and Microsoft want their consoles to be the center of living room entertainment but the average punter would much rather prefer a device that records TV and plays games rather than one that plays games and plays DVD's/Blu Ray's.

Hi there,

For what my comments are worth ...

I used to have an Xbox360 but I sold it in favour of a PS3 when the HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray war was over and Microsoft flat out said that they would never release a Blu-ray player for the Xbox360.

That said, the Xbox360 is the better games machine of the two, and for just a games rig it is cheaper. The Divx ability was nice, but since I only have an apple computer at home it was a bit of a pig to get it to see my videos on the Apple .. hardware investment starts to go up when you see you need a Media Centre PC in the house as well as the Xbox360 just to stream the movies/music.

Things I class as plus points on the PS3 .. blu-ray, the ability to replace the hard disk with a bigger one easily (Sony even give you the instructions in the box! That's a rarity amongst manufacturers) the online aspect of the PS3 is being expanded nicely, they are still playing catchup to the Xbox360 but it's getting closer now, the online gaming is free. Software to share music and videos from my Apple to the PS3 are easy to come by and free as well (I only found out by accident when I saw the PS3 had notices Azureus running on my Apple and said "Ooh look movies!" and then let me play them ... quite nifty really) And I like the physical looks of the PS3 over the Xbox360 .. but that's personaly preference .. it;s the Blue LEDs you see ;-)

If I could have both machines I would .. I'd also have a Wii as well as that is by far the most fun console I've played on .. sod buying games I could just play bowling or tennis all day :-)

PS. I've got an AppleTV anyway which does that role for me, find it even simpler to use.

Am I right in understanding it was 3 years ago you rented the consoles?! If so I think you may want to redo the experiment seems since then a whole lot more games have been released and you'll get a better idea!
