Why won't they do it though? What do they have to lose by doing it?

All it will do is make their system slightly more appealing....

Yeah I wish they would :( have to see with Firmware 3.0 as said above, but i doubt they'll enable, probably because they'd have to pay royalties to Microsoft to use NTFS?

I know Linux has a driver for NTFS. But OSX you can only read NTFS, not write???
Not sure why Sony can't just do that :(

Found some information on the Western Digital website on how to format a 1tb external hard drive to a single FAT32 potition:

How do I format an external USB or FireWire hard drive as FAT32 in Windows?

Anyone tried this or wants to give a go and test it out?

DSE are also having a sale on a Western Digital 1tb external hard drive - only $189.

theres no issue in formatting 1TB hdd to FAT32, its the limitation of reading larger than 4GB files on it.
You'll be able to see the drive OK thru the PS3 usb port.
There was an issue in where the firmware of the PS3 wouldn't see a drive larger than 500GB when connecting thru the SATA port (removing the internal notebook drive and connecting a 3.5inch drive attached to a ESATA cable then attached thru a third party connector to the internal SATA port)
I dont know if this has been fixed (firmware issue which suddenly appeared)
As i say this was quite a while ago when i first thought playTV was being released nearly 1 and a bit years ago.
As for the NTFS issue - it maybe a microsoft product, but so is WMA/WMV and they've clearly worked that one out.
With the SLIM dropping linux support maybe micosoft's NTFS format may be re-addressed.

So far from what i've read about firmware 3.0, there won't be support for NTFS.

4GB max file size will be fine for me... is it true that my 1tb storage will be cut right back to about 700mb if i format to FAT32? I read this was the case somewhere....

?? 700mb - 700GB?

I had a 750GB and it formated to 690ish GB from memory(guessing), haven't tried again for well over a year or so as i'm using TVersity to stream instead.
try this and see for your self....

nope - you'd have to buy the drive pref SATA (if you can even get ide these days)
a caddie for the HDD, again pref with ESATA support (optional) then decide whether its going to be an external USB attached drive (an format it for FAT32 or replace the internal hdd in the PS3 in which case you'll need another adapter (hence the esata caddie) to connect to internal SATA port. (cant remember if the drive is formatted during the restore process of the PS3)

The last 2 external HDDs I purchased (a 320GB and a 1TB) have both come pre-formatted in FAT32.

I think they are the same drive internally, just the more expensive one is apparently more robust...They both have external AC adapters though. I also think the glossier myBook would match the PS3 and most PCs better

So you can get external hard drives without external AC adapters? DO they just get their power form the USB cable?

Do you know of any good external hard drives like this? I'd much rather one i didn't have to plug into the mains to access....
