So last night I was having incredibly bad ping (600-700, not so good for arenas), even when ssh tunneling through my own server. The main problem was that my websites server is physically located in the midwest, while the oceanic servers are located in LA. I jumped on to wow tunnels and tried out their free trial and instantly was at 250-300 ping. I signed up for a month (I think it cost $5NZ for the month, not too bad really, I spend more on a coffee) and last night and this morning I was getting around 170 ping, so I'm very happy.

I did a quick look and noticed that it is possible to rent a really basic server in LA for ~$18USD per month, so it's not really worth it trying to get your own server going unless you have other things you want to do on it.

Just out of curiousity... which wowtunnel server did you use?
I normally use one of the australian servers, and pick which ever one has the lowest ping.
Im not sure if I should be using a US one though to minimise the distance between the wowtunnel server and the actual oceanic server.
170ms is awesome, i have been hanging around 250ms for the last week. Not bad considering im on Big Time though.

I used the western tunnels. From reading the faq and with what I understand about tunnels it seemed to be the best option. The aussie tunnels are hosted in australia, and essentially the idea behind them is the traffic is prioritised given that its ssh traffic instead of the usual WoW packet type, meaning that they get to the server faster, but for us in NZ it means that we have to send the packets to aussie before they are piped to the server.

Depending on what server you are on I would use the closest tunnel to that server. I think most, if not all, oceanic servers are LA so one of the west tunnels is best.

I'm on Khaz'Goroth, and I regularly get anywhere from 190-370ms on a normal day. Being on TelstraClear cable definitely helps too.

If there's only one technical issue I have with WoW, it's the frame rate drops in Dalaran and the Argent Tourney grounds, thanks in no small part to the player polygon traffic.
