gadgetmannz: I would go for the Xbox 360 for a number of reasons -

1. The microsoft media center. You can easily play avi's and mpegs on your tv via your network. The PC will pick up the xbox and vice versa.

The PS3 can play media too. Via the network, and from local storage.

2. You can't beat Xbox Live. Ok you pay for xbox live but it completely destroys Sony's free version. I'm in the UK and you can even watch Sky TV via your xbox now.

You might be right here. However one does have to weigh up free vs subscription. And also how much you game online. Personally I can't stand gaming online with consoles. Let's just say consoles tend to attract a certain calibre of online gamers that make me want to gouge my eyes out.

Also what you get in the UK is irrelevant.

3. The controllers for xbox are much better for gaming. The PS has barely evolved and the controllers feel the same as years ago. I find I can control a game easier with an Xbox.

Personal preference. You know the reason the XBox controller has changed is because the original one was completely awful. The playstation controller on the other hand has been very succesful. If it ain't broke, don't fix it they say...

4. Loads more games for it.

Quantity != Quality

Once again it becomes personal preference as to which platform exclusives float your boat.

Seriously couldn't stress enough, Xbox 360 is the way to go. Especially with Project Navan coming out.

Project Natal perhaps? The PS3 has Playstation Move which is actually looking a little bit better for serious gaming with motion controls. Natal looks like it has potential in the family and casual gaming arena, but seems a bit gimicky to me.

Well as mentioned towards the start. games arent a big thing for me, jsut the occasional one, will be using it more for media.

Def wont be downloading games/demos, data charges would kill me :) (Or the wife will when she sees the bill)

Def wont be downloading games/demos, data charges would kill me :) (Or the wife will when she sees the bill)

PS3 then. Blu rays look fantastic even on 720P TVs.

I agree, for media the PS3 is much better, for gaming the Xbox 360 dominates, its media side of things is a bit lacking though.

I have a PS3 and was a bit disappointed with how locked down it is. It has networking but you can't view/alter the files on the PS3 hard drive externally, so if you want to rename any song files or delete some etc you have to use the hand controller. I was really hoping I could manipulate the files directly but it's a closed shop. You can set up a media server on another computer and play from that computer, but not the other way around.

I'm keeping the PS3 though for Bluray, singstar for the wife etc. It can have playTV added too for freeview HD. All in all it's still cheaper than separate parts, but there is a tradeoff that it doesn't do each part maybe as good as a dedicated component. Still it is well supported, even to the point of things like it looks like it will do 3D bluray when they arrive etc. Very easy to change the hard drive too and has wireless built in.

Well, got some stuff on Trademe, so once that sells Ill have the funds to go shopping... going from what everyone has said here, looks like PS3 it is :)

Make sure you get a program called PS3 Media Server, it is a great way to play media files stored through on a PC on your PS3

Had both, think my thread about modding XBox for HDMI/Optical the cheap was is still on here

Sold the Xbox for a second PS3, in the end the free gaming + controller being nicer(imo) was a winner
Plus I wanted something a bit quiet for the bedroom, the xbox sounded like a jet taking off even when there was nothing in the dvd drive

I have moved across the ditch. Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

altho from point of sale the xbox is the cheaper option, you get alot more "bang for your buck" with the ps3. it comes with rechargable controllers, wifi, + free online gaming (which i doubt will ever become chargable as sony a highly against this as much as they are against paying for DLC's).

in addition, IMO the exclusives on sony are alot more appealing that on xbox. including heavy rain, final fanstay vs, gt5, white knight chronciles, yakuza 3, etc.

the only real advantage xbox has over ps3 currently is the online community but ps3 is slowly catching up as the consoles come down in price.

lol, no it doesn't

UNcahrted 2, GOW3, KZ2, Heavy Rain, inFAMOUS, MGS3.

ALL far superior to anything offered on the 360.

The PS3 is a far superior GAMING system than the 360.

Gaming side of things, ill probably only end up with the following : Uncharted 2, GTA4 and Red Dead Redemption :)
Altho i said that with my PS2 when that was released... "only buy a few games I love"... god knows how much later...eep.

But its a PS3 Im going for, have decided on that - fingers crossed my TM stuff sells tonight and Ill be on my way :)
