Bioshock 1 & 2
Dawn of War II, Dawn of War II Chaos Rising, Dawn of War II Retribution have great story based single player/co-op campaigns.

The original "Mafia" game had a surprisingly good story for a sandbox game.

Knights of the Old Republic was good.

As mentioned earlier, NOLF is classic. Not sure about "story" but the dialog is genius. I never did get around to finishing the sequel and my CD has gone AWOL.

Shadow of the Colossus, ICO (both about to be released in new "HD" versions).

Grim Fandango (I need to replay this, fanastic!)

Uncharted 1/2 (Uncharted is about the only full-length game I've ever played through 3 times, and I started gaming in the Atari 2600 era)

There was some other 486-era game which I think had "Bio" in the name which involved you waking up having been partially turned into some sort of cyborg which was quite cool. It had a bit of an "Another World" feel to it. Can't remember the name though :(

Edit: Found it, my Google-Fu was weak, it was "BioForge". It looks rather crappy by todays standards, but given that it's 16 years old, that's not too surprising.

Alone in the dark and LA Noir might be good ones, although LA Noir is apparently incredibly linear.

I think Dragon Age Origins was extremely well written, especially if you put in the effort to fraternize with characters

I have enjoyed LA Noir, but it is very frustrating trying to work out who is guilty by facial expression and loose clues.

If you have a PS3 I really loved Heavy Rain. It was actually hard for me to put the controller down.

Many great recommendations already and I suppose it depends on what hardware you own and what type of game-play genres you like...

On PS3 only, Heavy Rain, and Uncharted 1+2 are fantastic story driven games. Heavy Rain being a unique QTE driven experience where it will play out differently depending on your actions and decisions. Uncharted is a very story centric 3rd person shooter.In fact one of the few games my wife will sit and watch me play as the story, characters and presentation is lke watching a movie play out.

Other great story driven games already mentioned are Bio-shock (a first person shooter with an awesome design and story), Half-Life 2 (you can pick up the Orange Box really cheap which holds Half Life 2 and ep 1+2 providing hours of story driven first person shooter with a twist).

If you're a role playing game fanatic , many suggestions have already been made :)

I can't think of a single reason why this was a bad move but there are plenty of good ones if people stopped crying for 2 seconds and thought about it. Besides it's not like Bioware have blocked this part of the world from playing, just order a copy from Amazon like I did.

Collectors edition plus 3 day freight was still far cheaper than what I've seen any NZ/Aus store listing it.

BioForge by Origin System was the first pseudo-3D RPG game. It's awesome and great play and storyline.

In fact, if you can find as much of the Origin System games and LucasArts games (those DOS-days games) they're gems and great fun!

I just got the broken sword series from steam for about $12. I played the original about 10 years ago and enjoyed it. It's frustrating trying to remember what I'm supposed to do

I just finished replaying through the Broken Sword series (1-4) a couple of weeks ago.
