Pretty sure we had this happen for a friend when I bought him a Kinect for his birthday his console was a older white original Xbox 360 not a slim version. I am pretty sure though we just managed to reinstall the update using a new disk rented from a video shop. This I have to add was on a console which was modded.

I am thinking it's more likely needing a new dvd drive.

I also had a issue similar to this when doing a recent update myself would have been the update prior to the one you've had the issue with it started the update then just came up with the error update failed please try again. Problem was that it didn't take us back to the dashboard it just sat there with no choice other than to power off the console, which upon restart would go straight back to the same error.

I ended up with a near identical conversation with MS about where to from here and they were apologetic and advised sending in for a repair also. In the end I took it to someone I knew who mods consoles got the latest mod done and got the console fully working again with no issues since. All up cost just under $100.

At the end of the day it's fine to mod your console and you should have no online issues if you don't play backups at all. Of course making and or playing of backups is illegal and breaches MS terms of use so can and will eventually lead to your console being banned from Xbox live which is not great. Plus if going down the modded path you risk the chance of future updates potentially bricking your machine (or at least forcing you to remod the console).

Either way I hope it all works out for you in the end and that you get your issue resolved without having to spend much more $$$. :-)

I think it's perfectly reasonable to expect that an official accessory and software updates for a device should not break it, I also think you would easily win this if you decided to take the disputes tribunal route.

Did you buy the kinect from the same place you got the xbox, that's where it gets tricky.. do you file against retailer A, retailer B or Microsoft NZ.

Based on where each of my items have come from;
Xbox won from GZPE08 CHCH, so maybe MF will replace it for me for free?

Kinect and associated games came from the partners work colleague.

I think the best course of action would be to name MS should I decide to take this further, but if modding the console would also work for a limited cost then that may be an option.

It depends on how you want to proceed if it's just the dvd drive then anyone who mods consoles can do this for you basically they remove your old one taking the drive key off it put new one in and give it your old drives key. As for the mod that can be done at the same time.

The guy i've used previously has offered the mod free when replacing a drive as with your console in pieces it only takes a couple of minutes to do. Of course if it's not the dvd drive I would think modding would not work as if you can start your console and or your games most of the time I would think the problem is the drive not necessarily the update (although the update may have helped speed things along).

I would honestly say now we're mostly past the RROD for the Xbox that DVD Drive failures are the biggest culprits in Xbox (apparent) deaths as a lot of people just go oh it's not working lets get a new one like people do when they can't turn on their PC it's often the PSU.

That's what retailers love about it all if you don't know what your talking about or who to ask the right questions of then most people just buy new products instead of new parts.

If it was an MS update that caused the problem then their response does stink!
I read somewhere if it has the number 008799842669 on it it's one of the incompatible ones.
Does yours have that number on the back?
Also when was it purchased?

Also when was it purchased?

Mine is not likely to have that number, as it appears to be someone else's 12 digit serial number. ie console ID = serial number as far as I can tell.
As per my last post, it was not purchased, it was won.

EDIT

So I looked again and found a console ID, which is in the system menu on the console, and mine is nothing like that. But, I still have not seen any evidence which supports your statement, apart from web blogs etc, but no official statement.

Honestly I think your issue is not the update as if it was a faulty update you wouldn't be able to read the disks at all and in some cases your console would just not load anything other than a trying to update message.

If on the chance that MS had released a update that rendered some consoles pretty much uselsess (without modding) for playing games from disks then this would have been picked up pretty quick since the updates are not optional and they would have released a fix of sorts which could be anything from a new update to a manual console repair requiring sending it away or to a repair agent.

If your disks boot then come up with errors seconds, minutes or hours after you insert them it's most likely your disk drive and the laser failing to read. I suggest before spending money on getting a new console try replacing the dvd drive it should cost $70 - $100 and if your lucky enough your repair agent may not charge you (or just a token fee) if it does not work afterwards as they will be able to take the drive back out therefore losing only a short amount of time. Ultimately that money is well spent as it will save you a few $200 - $400 on the price of a new console.

I suggest one provisio on the above.

If yours is a 203W console don't spend a cent on it. This was the original design that was prone to faults due to overheating. That's while I asked how old it was. Your link showed it to be about 1275 days old.

You can just buy a 175W or 150W used one from trademe, they also come with HDMI.

Mine is a 175W or falcon? console. This was made sure of when it was given to me.
