Being new to this whole gaming thing people keep on recommending games I should play "oh get Bioshock " "Oh get all of us" etc only to find they don't play on this console. I am seriously thinking about buying a PS3! I was going to buy one S/H but there seems to be a lot of them for sale on TM with faults. I thought gaming was suppose to be relaxing its nothing but Stress!!

Get a PS3 and make an US PSN account, then subscribe to PS+...you'll get a bunch of games for free including bioshock and uncharted

The changes mentioned in this are pretty good.  What is not good is the NZ price of the Kinect free console $599 that's around $130 more than what it would cost to buy at the USD price of $399 ($463 NZD roughly).

Hopefully we'll see some bundles coming out quick for this to make it seem more attractive.

"we will offer anyone who owns an Xbox 360 or Xbox One access to popular games and entertainment apps without an Xbox Live Gold membership" this statement has convinced me to buy. Great decision Microsoft!

Or in other words, catching up to the other major console which offered all of this on day one :)

Kyanar:
amorpeth: Are you using any much of the media functionality? I'd love to know a bit more about what you doing with sky. I also heard you need a music pass subscription to stream music and an Xbox gold subscription to use other media bits like Netflix and even Internet Explorer. Is that true?

TV functionality (other than "dumb passthrough") doesn't work outside the US, so it does nothing at all with Sky.  You do need a music pass subscription to stream music, and local streaming hasn't been implemented yet (apart from as a DLNA Play To receiver).  Xbox Live Gold is required to use Netflix/Hulu/Internet Explorer/Xbox Music Pass as well, like you say.

So today we announced that you will be able to use the entertainment apps - e.g. Netflix, Hulu Plus, YouTube, etc on Xbox One/Xbox 360 without needing an XBOX Live membership:

What do I get now with my Xbox?

With the changes announced today, this means that everyone can enjoy the amazing gaming, TV and entertainment experiences that Xbox has to offer, right out of the box. With an Xbox One or Xbox 360, you now get access to a vast range of our most popular entertainment apps, including Netflix, Hulu Plus, HBO GO, YouTube, Twitch, ESPN, NFL, Xbox Music, and experiences such as Internet Explorer, Skype, OneDrive, OneGuide, and Upload Studio without needing Xbox Live Gold.

But not in NZ without using a service like unblock.us or unotelly?

nice one

netflix worked on my 360 with slingshot global / hulu not so much - nice to see i wont need gold in future

but the $80 is still reasonable value imo given the free games for gold ie. 24 per annum, some of which ain't bad (and the discounted games as well)

note: as others have said - changing the console and live account region to US is also required to get the majority of these apps

yeah, you have to use unblock.us or unotelly to get hulu plus, Netflix, cw now, etc - but I can confirm that they will work. Note that this is somewhat outside of the control of Xbox/Microsoft - and you have to use these dns/vpn services with other devices to get streaming working too :-)

Skype, quickflix (on xbox 360, xbox one shows as 'coming soon'), other apps work fine in NZ consoles and will now be available both in NZ and without Xbox Gold.

Any idea if SkyTv has plans to integrate?
