If you're looking for "it just works", and you're aiming around $2500, I'd say https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/WKSGGPC50065/GGPC-Corsair-RX-5700-XT-Gaming-PC-AMD-Ryzen-7-3700 with a mouse and keyboard that suit your taste. It's all the newest parts, all AMD, and good bang for buck.

You could certainly put something together cheaper, but this thing falls out of the box, you plug in your screen, mouse, keyboard and speakers/headphones and you're off to the races.

Get an extra HDD with it as well.... games these days will chew a 500GB like it was nothing ;) (Looking at his 70GB Forza install)

Only issues I can see with this is that the RAM is only 2666MHz, ryzen should really be paired with 3200MHz if not 3600MHz ram. I also feel like the cpu is over spec for the gpu, I guess it sets you up for a gpu upgrade in the future.

Ah didn’t see that. The 5700xt is on par with 2060 super so not a bad combo. Memory definitely should be 3200 or over.

If you are not in a hurry, I would probably wait for the custom AIB designs to start surfacing for the RX5700/XT, from what I have read the blower cooler is as awful as ever. Also once the RTX super series to drop, you might even get a bit sharper pricing.

In saying that, it's not a bad price for the performance. I can see why Nvidia needed to release the super line-up, it would have taken quite the bite out of 2060 sales.

Might be finally time to retire the Haswell/Kepler partnership and switch sides for a fat, juicy Matisse/Navi or Matisse/Turing. Maybe once the pricing settles a bit...

Just perused a few reviews, people are turning those leaf blowers to 100% and getting 2GHz clocks on the 5700xt. Performance is close to 2070 super base performance.

Interesting, hopefully some mad-lad will rip off the stock cooler and frankenstein a water cooler on there, like GN has done previously with their samples.

It certainly seems to punch a little bit higher than the RTX2060 Super in some tests as is.

For $100usd less, be interesting to see what the prices are here and if there is a bit of a clearance on the 2070 non supers that are still around.

I'm generally figuring out which X570 board to pair with the 3700X I pulled the trigger on today along with the new case and PSU. Re-using the GTX1080 though because it's handling what I'm playing perfectly fine.

At this point I'm looking at the Gigabyte Aorus Elite, hopefully they'll sort out the chipset fan profiles they're working on to deal with the noise issue. It's almost at my budget ceiling [highest would be a Strix X570-F].

Mainly I need to have a minimum of 2 x m.2 and 2 x PCIe16 because I have a third NVME on a PCIe card. 3 x PCIe16 would be nice so I could try this SAS card I have lying around but I might end up throwing that into a spare PC I have lying around. Maybe.

I have zero interest in overclocking beyond what the XFR and PBO can achieve automatically.

Hmmm, have pinged off a couple of email queries to PB Tech and had no reply.

Considering that I'm looking at spending some $$, this isn't a good start from them in terms of getting my business.

Any other retailers worth a look, for an 'off-the-peg' gaming PC? ExtremePC look like they would be OK. Does anyone have experience buying from them?

Unfortunately I have had a similar experience with them in the past.

For online retailers, another two worth looking at are MightyApe (who is a geekzone affiliate I believe?) and Computer Lounge. I bought most of my parts from Computer Lounge last build and would recommend.

I just bought a mouse and keyboard from extreme pc, easy to deal with and willing to price match so I could buy both from the same company, packaged well and delivery was two days to South Island.
Not a big purchase and nothing went wrong which is where you really find it a retailer is worth dealing with again but my experience was good.

Playing devils advocate but....   Don't do it! It will suck up decades of your life and tens of thousands of dollars.  Stick with pre-built consoles which are basically heavily subsidised, well supported PCs these days anyway.  (xbox already has keyboard+mouse support on some games aye?)

This is not far off for me too (although I haven't lost decades of my life!)... except I would say keep a console and have a mid range PC. It's what I did. I go console for the majority of my games as it's just easier and I can't be arsed with dealing with a PC, however, I love the PC for my sim games or games that have good mod support and I can be bothered playing around with.

I didn't have a massive amount of experience building PC's but I got a Gorilla in the Mist and went back and forth with the Mightyape team and I will say, they offered a fantastic service. They were able to swap out parts and made great suggestions based on what I was wanting from the PC. They did up three different version of a PC from my description and budget and I ended up taking bits from two of them. I imagine it doesn't always happen but they didn't have the CPU I wanted in stock so they put in a better one and kept the price as quoted which they didn't have to do.

I would recommend making initial enquiries with them. Perhaps start off with an existing machine they have and explain what parts you want swapped out. You don't have to buy from them so it's worth having a yarn IMO.

I can personally recommend DTC on Dominion Road in Auckland. They are competitive, flexible and I was happy with what they did for me. Perhaps not QUITE to the finished standard in terms of cable management, but to be honest, it was not too far off.
