I think at this point OP has the answer they’re looking for.

An xbox series S would be a good upgrade, even for a 1080p TV as last gen cannot do 60fps without a lowered render scale ie. 720p or less to achieve target. Jaguar package really showing it’s age.

I think this comment “Thanks team, seems pretty clear that PC is an expensive option for no real gain.” set off some further discussion...

We actually have a 40-something inch 1080 TV so 4K not necessary. For the near future I think we'll stick with what we've got. I think my son's interest in a new console is more about keeping up with his friends than a necessity but when we do come to renew I think we'll stick with a console. 

 

I'm in the graphics industry and he's already done some pretty cool editing in FCP on my iMac. He also has a reasonable laptop for other productivity but it's not up to gaming! So basically no more hardware required.
