In all honesty, you can never really gain an accurate answer of what you should get unless you ask specfic questions

I want a CPU that can let me run Windows Vista, let me do word processing and surf the internet. In other words; entry level normal user. So an AMD (lowish end) will most definitely fit the bill without costing an arm and a leg.

Basically;

What do you want (general question for eveyone) .

Gaming? word processing? Graphic rendering? programming?

Unfortunately, there is no generic answer that will help anyone out really.

Like you would go get a quad core, if you dont have apps that cant take advantage of it and are probably never going to take advantage of it; or, youre just an average Joe, knows nothing about computers and just wants it to work.

i want a CPU that is good for gaming and i want it to be future proof as well.
so i think maybe some thing like an i7.
right now there is not too many games that can make use of its power but later on it will be used alot more.

PS Never feed your Mogwai after midnight

Agreed, you are better off buying a reasonably priced machine now and upgrading in 18 months rather than trying to buy something high powered and expensive and getting it to last 3-5 years.

Also that link you provided dale77 is quite good, shows quite obviously that AMD is offering quite competitive products at certain price points. I hope people can stop parroting advice that was valid a year ago but not now ("Core2 is where it's at" etc).

I also agree with Ragnor, you have to consider the system as a whole when building. Get the best value out of your budget.
