If you like Batman, IMHO Batman Arkham Asylum is not only one of the greatest games I've ever played but it's also the best Batman story I have had the pleasure to experience. It puts the movies to shame if you ask me.
I would agree with the above comment on Batman too with the new Batman Arkham City coming out soon too there's a good way to go from the first straight into the 2nd one easily afterwards.
I am surprised no one has mention the Baldurs Gate series of course though these are quite old now. Bioforge as mentioned earlier is great as well SW Knights of the Old Republic.
As you mention a average PC then Steam is probably the best way to go for looking at the older games as they often have the older games series for sale for ridiculously small amounts.
I may get in trouble for saying this one but I really enjoyed Dante's Inferno and along with Halo Reach (not one for this category) it is the only game I have nearly gotten all achievements for (980 for Dante's so far).

I totally agree, loved Batman: Arkham Asylum!
Though I realise its not a game, I would recommend watching "Batman: The Animated Series" (the one from the 90s, bonus nostalgia trip) since it is pretty much the exact same version of Batman and most of the villains (as opposed to the movie versions I mean) as well as the same voice actors and scriptwriters. Paul Dini wrote the script for Batman: AA as well as all the best Batman: TAS episodes.

Ooh yes, I forgot about this one. It's very QTE heavy but a great story!
I believe that "Fahrenheit" is the version to avoid as it has the more R-rated bits removed. Indigo Prophecy is the one to look for. Heavy Rain is the "spiritual successor" to this game.
Also - agree re: Batman Asylum. Brilliant game. The "moment" blew my mind. (You'll know the bit I'm talking about...)
The Witcher then follow it with The Witcher 2. Great story and a really fun RPG.
Dragon Age Origins (forget the subsequent releases). Mighty Ape have it on sale for PC and each origin has a different story line which makes for great replay value. It's not the greatest RPG around but the story is compelling and it can easily give 100+ hours of play. If you get the PC version there are some great mods available that add new stories too.
You might also find The Elder Scrolls series interesting. Stories are great and you can get quite a wide variety of play.
Final Fantasy VII - Played on PS1 back in the late 90's. At the time, with no previous RPG gaming experience, I had no idea what to expect, but found this games story completely immersive, and showed I could enjoy games other than FPS.
Tomb Raider - Yes, I'll be shot for bringing this one up, but at the time, a very believable story line and addictive gameplay.
Half Life (original) - Still to this day, I have yet to find a game with a better story, and especially so considering the time it came out. My number 1 favourite.
FEAR - Whilst a good deal bloodier and more graphically violent, it had a good centralised story, with characters you loved to hate.
Final Fantasy X - 8 and 9 were OK, but 10 jumped back into a deeper story, with good sub-plots.
The only game that ever moved me to tears (and i'm a grown man) was a PS2 game called ICO the story was fantastic but not in a narrative manner but more cinematic storytelling. In fact there is no dialogue at all, yet it was so powerfully compelling from the get go to the very end - where I burst into tears, well nearly anyway. haha
