sigh - its the PC master race. the question was not whether console or PC, but which console.

The reality is, it's as good an answer as any: if i were to suggest the best platform, for gaming, it would be a PC. How is that not helpful... even if it is outside the box (i.e. the immediate discussion parameters)??

My reply stands.

Well, back to topic. I just got a PS4, for one game, F1 2015 to play online with a mate in Melbourne. And for Lightbox, Netflix. I'm a gaming noob, been years since I was a gamer. Orchid Righteous 3D anyone??

To help others, what does one get with the Xbox and PS subscription? Free games I hear, how many,how often, any good ones? other stuff?
Does the Xbox have the same SVOD app options as PS4? I don't think it does. Lightbox being one key local example

Graphics and Frame rate seem similar? I imagine if one platform is "better" it probably is marginal and not an issue?

PS has the Eye, like the Kinnect but I gather the Kinect is much more entrenched in games?

I think you cater for that. The thread is about consoles, which one, not gaming platforms which one.

And I don't think your attitude is that great. You could have side-topiced your post, and offered your constructive and polite opinions, rather than starting them with the word crap.

I agree. I've two older brothers (both 50+ yrs old ;) who swear by XBox 360 & XBox One.

As i trust their judgement and integrity - and obviously their long exposure to all things XBox,

since the original XBox, i would probably biased and go with recommending XBox.

My personal experience, and word from friends who also own PS3/4 consoles, is that

PS4 is ever bit as good as XBox.

Seriously though, at this late point in gaming tech' development - both platform & in-game development..

the differences have to be miniscule in overall quality of experience. I mean... what can i tell ya? Flip a coin... ;)

I currently own an Xbox One and a PS Vita, but have had most consoles between now and the N64 days.

I bought the Xbox One because of the larger and more comfortable controller and because I prefer Halo over Killzone. Until the announcement of Xbox 360 backwards compatibility I would have suggested you get a PS4 because of the cheapish PS1 games on the PSN Store, now I would point out that backwards compatibility will mean a large chunk of $15 games on x360 Trademe will work on the Xbox One.

As it stands right now, PS4 has a nicer user interface and store than the xOne. However we're about to get the Windows 10 pre-release firmware for testing, and that may vastly change the experience. Certainly the Win10 store is miles better than the Win8.1 or Win8.0 stores were on PC.

Going off the systems right now, my XBox One is currently a media consumption machine and I occasionally play games. My PS4 is a video game system and I occasionally consume media. Those focuses should inform your purchase choices - XBox One works REALLY well for media consumption, and there's potential for a Freeview dongle in the future (there's already one in the UK but requires region jiggery to make work locally), also the HDMI input and IR controls are all quite nice, especially all paired up with the Kinect controls. The biggest downside is that the base UI is kinda cludgy and slow feeling at times, and the store and things are generally unhelpful and obtuse.

The PS4, on the other hand, is clunky (in my opinion) for things that aren't video games, but the store works well and the games all tend to work their best on the PS4. You can consume media on it, but you can't get a remote for the console, and the control has a big bastard of a light shining if you ever want to use it while consuming media to make adjustments. Net loss, there.

I'd keep my computer in a heart-beat over all of them, but using the PS4 I get the most variety and video-gamey stuff. The only thing the Xbox has that the PS4 doesn't is a solid first party racing game (Forza). Gran Turismo 7 is a while away yet, and at this point I'm not sure they're going to be able to outdo Forza.

Anything I say is the ramblings of an ill informed, opinionated so-and-so, and not representative of any of my past, present or future employers, and is also probably best disregarded.

I've owned all Playstations since PS one (except PS4), and all Xbox's since the first xbox (confusingly not the xbox one :). And I have also gamed on computers since before the days of the zx80 (for those who might be interested in degrees of noobness :)

The Ps4 is the first console I have not yet owned - although probably will when the right exclusives come along (ratchet and clank for the kids and Uncharted for me).

As noted above, the Xbox one is great as an all round gaming and media centre. I have it running Netflix, Plex, BBC, and various other media sites. The only thing we don't use it for is freeview or on the odd occasion I want to rent a movie off iTunes or use fanpass. Its great as an all-rounder, and has the added advantage of being able to be controlled by a harmony remote (which the Ps4 does not). You can also add in up to two additional external drives for storage in addition to the either 500 g or 1 T hard drive that comes with it. You will end up eating a lot of storage id, like me, you purchase all your games online rather than in physical format.

Xbox can now also stream games to a windows 10 pc - which works very well, and is good if others want to use the tv its attached to. Xbox one is also about to get backwards compatibility for a selection of 360 games.

The Kinect is OK, but in reality never really gets used (the same goes for playstation eye - except maybe for singstar!)

The Ps4 does have the slight graphical edge apparently, but as InactiveKick notes, you are unlikely to notice it (although there are quite a few websites round where people go to obsess over the graphical differences). It can also live stream to a PS Vita (although reports on the quality vary). You cant attach an external drive to a PS4 (but can replace the internal drive easily). It will have lower oveall capacity than a XBOX one.

I'm very happy with the XBOX (and have always had Xbox leanings), however I suspect you will be happy enough with whatever you go for.

I notice the ps4 developments are very gaming orientated, which is a bold move away from the home media centre concept.
With windows 10 kicking off I'm much more seriously interested in the Xbox one to replace my PS3.
As others have mentioned, it's great to see simple things like an IR port to integrate nicely with a harmony remote.

You get this too with an Xbox Live Gold membership. From memory, I got Assassin Creed - (Black flag?) and Metal Gear free a few months back. Still yet to play them as I just downloaded them and forgot about them!

I'm not a huge gamer at all. I inherited my brothers old Xbox (original) with a bunch of crappy games and bought the Xbox one on release. I've never owned a PS at all, so the following is just pure personal experience.

I find the Xbox an excellent all round entertainment unit, i.e. games and media. I mainly use the Xbox for media consumption - with things like netflix, bbc iplayer, xbox video for the odd movie, youtube groove music etc. I've bought the media remote for it, but I've also got a logitech harmony remote programmed for the xbox and both work well. I play the odd game from time to time if I'm bored and I find it fits my needs perfectly and wouldn't hesitate in recommending one. In saying that, I'm certain that you will be able to do all those things on PS, so it really does come down to personal preference.

The only slight gripe (and it's very slight!) I have with the xbox is apps (might not be relevant to the OP). I'm not sure if it's quite as big as the difference in Windows Phone and Google, iOS. But for example lightbox doesn't have an xbox app, but they have one for the PS. There may be other examples of this, but as I mentioned above, I've never owned a PS so can't say. Perhaps others can comment here.

I see Xbox One as reasonably compelling but everyone's mileage will vary.

As I see it they are both consoles that both play games and play media. Xbox has slightly better media support (with some nifty tricks if you want them) and PS has slightly better graphical grunt (I can't particularly tell the difference so means nothing to me). Xbox controller is stunningly good. PS controller is much improved on PS3 but I prefer the Xbox controller for my large hands. Obviously if you are in to particular games then that sells you on a console and if you have friends with consoles then get what they have.

As it stands I see the Xbox having a clear lead on games and being largely equal on other things. First Xbox 360 games will be backward compatible from Nov 15 or so when 100 games will be available with more adding as they go. If you have a Xbox 360 disc then you insert it into the Xbox One and it will prompt you to download the backward compat file and once it os downloaded then awayyyyy you go. If you have the Xbox 360 game electronically then it just appears in your list of games to install. This process is in preview for a hand full of games and it works excellently with cross platform party and chat support and the old blades overlay. Xbox Gold membership is required to access multiplayer gaming and a hadfull of other features. Its biggest upside is free games with two Xbox One and two Xbox 360 games each month (similar to PS4's deal). All the future Xbox 360 games for gold games will be backwards compatible so effectively that's four games a month for Xbox specifically.

The biggest benefit to Xbox currently as I see it (other than the excellent games lineup already coming in 2015 and 2016) is EA Access. For $40 a year you get access to a current list of approx. 10-12 games which includes Game of the Year Dragon Age Inquisition, nearly all the 15 versions of EA sports games, plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare, Need for Speed, Battlefield 4, etc. It also allows free 5 hour demos for most EA games and also early access to those games and to top it off you get 10% discount on digital EA purchases! So theoretically you can get 5 hours free of Star Wars Battlefront and do this early. If you like ti then buy it and all progress just carries over. This package is stunning value in my mind.

Something doesn't quite add up in that line

Agree on the app side of things. Spotify has a PS3 app now, which isn't stunning, but it means you can play music and control it via a phone etc.
I'm personally looking for a media machine that can also play games.
The PS3 is presently that for me, with harmony remote integration, bluray player, youtube, spotify, playing video files etc.

It's pretty clunky in some respects, and you can't navigate to it from a computer to tidy up the music contents for example. That sort of thing annoys the heck out of me, as you have to use a hand controller/or the harmony remote and click 100 times to delete a few tracks etc. The PS3 is very much a closed shop, and you can't browse it's contents remotely. It does have a heap of support though on the apps side of things, and the games are fine too.

I have an original fat PS3 with an upgraded hard drive. I expect it'll fail with that green light of death at some stage. I'm very keen to see how the Windows 10 update goes for the Xbox One as this is looking like a better media fit for me, especially now it has a bluray player inbuilt etc. Much like say chromecast etc, I see the media future as having app support, and being fairly open sourced. I see windows offering that more than Sony, and their social media gaming type direction on the PS4 just misses the mark for me, such that I can't see a benefit in my setup of going to the PS4, and no ability to turn the unit on via a harmony remote for example.

Same applies to Xbox games for 360 and one if you have Xbox live gold. one difference is that games you get for the Xbox under 'games with gold' are yours to keep even if you later cancel games with gold. On the PlayStation, I understand that they are only useable while you continue to subscribe to PSPlus
