I paid $94 for HFW on a launch-day special - currently $108 new (or $70/80 if second-hand on Trademe). Just sold it here on GZ for $75 ($70 net after included postage). As mentioned earlier here, I got 120 hours of fun out of it.

My net cost of $24 is 20 cents per play-hour. Games aren’t cheap but pretty good value when you look at it this way. Adds to the case for discs against downloads.

That's always how I look at it, hundreds of hours becomes cents per hour of enjoyment.  I know the up-front cost is not equitable for everyone, but i'm lucky enough to be able to risk games here and there that i might not end up playing after I get them, or after I spend a few hours in them.

I can remember paying ~$100+ for games 25 years ago. When you consider the vastly better quality of games (like HFW) that we get now for much the same price, current games seem pretty good value.

Thoroughly enjoying Cyberpunk 2077. It will never fully recover from its cocked-up launch but in its current guise it’s truly brilliant IMO. Anecdotally, so far I’m finding no glitches or problems - less than I found in Horizon Forbidden West. It looks stunning on PS5.

However I find it is complex and there’s a lot to know and understand about it plays and how to play it - not covered at all by tutorials. I read a lot of ‘beginner’s tips’ before I started and in the early stages but they don’t necessarily make full sense until you’ve had a fair bit of hands-on.

I now realise that I have been playing it somewhat superficially and that I would do it very differently if I re-started it. So after much thought - at 60 hours, level 23, stats showing 12% progression - I have decided to re-start so I can play it more ‘properly’.  Obviously there will be a lot of repetition but I think it’s worth it because it’s so good.

it's interesting that CP77 for PS4 (and Xbox) is still showing at a score of 57 on Metacritic. That rating is from the original version released in 2020 and is the result of the buggy and glitched original release.

Now that several patches and updates have been released - including the major PS5 update a couple of days ago - it seems a bit unfair for it to still be saddled with the original score. Surely it's a vastly better game now.

There's not actually a PS5 review score showing yet on Metacritic. I wonder if one will eventuate.

Why? The game released in an absolute state of disgust, it shouldn't even have been released. It deserves every sh%%y score it still has.

Of course you’re right - in respect of the original release. However the updates for PS and Xbox, are effectively re-releases and it’s now a hugely better game.

What I was getting at above is that the original reviews were for PS4 and the new PS5 version really deserves its own reviews. It’s good to see that it’s now getting them. The original version for PS4 rated 57 on Metacritic. The updated PS5 version is now rating 75 - which IMO is fair, reasonable and accurate. The game will never fully recover from that botched original release but putting the history and bad feeling to one side, it is now a pretty good game.

I think we have establised by now in 2022 that online ratings sites are a joke.

One confusion I find sometimes is how to cost effectively buy additional content.

Hitman 3 is an example. There are so many versions of the additional content - Gold Edition, GOTY Edition etc - and two complete games (1 & 2) with those versions, plus other DC boots and pieces.

Working out the most cost effective way to get the most content is not straightforward.

Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak on Steam (steampowered.com)

Back when I played Homeworld 20 odd years ago I always wondered what it'd be like playing an equivalent of it on a planet surface.  Now that has arrived.

Gosh was that 20 years ago?  *Shivers*

I don’t think that’s at all fair. Certainly, if an online rating site consisted only of reviews by ‘mass’ users, then the the result is likely to be a joke. I don’t know if there are sites like that - and if there are, I wouldn’t be bothered reading them.

However, the aggregation by Metacritic of game scores arising from serious reviews by reputable gaming sites fulfills a useful service and gives valuable consensus results. Metacritic has ratings based on ‘professional’ reviewers’ scores and on user reviewers’ scores. I find the former ratings very useful - and never look at the latter.

I agree. Like anything reviews are subjective, and if you find a reviewer who shares your tastes and enjoys the same games, I have found that it's a reasonable way to gauge things. Having said that, some franchises get poor reviews overall but I love playing them. Crackdown 1 and 2 were two of my favourite games but got very average reviews. I think if you enjoy a genre a lot, then you can overlook some flaws.

Metacritic is easily able to be gamed and theres tons of examples of "reputable" review sites being complicit in that gaming of the system.

Would be good if you could share some of these examples.

Elden Ring pro critics agree on the extreme difficulty - and there is no option to change the difficulty setting. You have to admire the devs for sticking to their guns on this - but have to wonder if it will affect sales - a game receiving universal critical acclaim but perhaps not getting mass acceptance. I suspect a good proportion of players will end up not completing it.

I was totally wrong, ER has sold at volumes rivaling GTA V in its early months:

That's interesting, and makes me wonder whether I'm playing at the 'wrong' pace.

When I first started the game, summons were everywhere. Use the item next to a pool and the summon signs would pop up almost instantly. But now, in what I believe to be late-game areas, the summons are few and far between. The hardcore players will have moved on, and I'm wondering whether I'm ahead of the more 'casual' players, therefore no summons.

Even if I use the item that lets me get summoned, it's often several minutes before it activates, whereas in the early days it was effectively instant.
