In a month I will be moving into my new place which will have TC cable broadband. Now I am looking at my option in regards to VOIP + wireless. Given that is is cable I am left with one of two options

1) Buy a PAP2T and connect it to a new WRT54G2 (which I have found to be rock solid)

or

2) Buy the all inclusive WRP400 (which I havent heard such stunning remarks about)

Which option would you go for and why (cost not really the issue between these two setups)..

I would use PAP2T only if I travel a lot and need to carry it with a laptop (i.e. small and cheap, no worries about damaging it). The PAP2T is the early VoIP box with only the low quality CODEC, and there is limited network management (i.e. asks for management but it is still up to the separate router).

The WRT400 is a better option for VoIP, supporting better CODECs and also managing the network traffic. It also means you have everything combined and is easier to manage. I've got the older WRTP54GP2 and has been rock solid for over 2 years.

You can never have enough Volvos!

I haven't ever played with a WRP400 so can't offer any personal comments on it's performance.

My only comment would be to avoid the PAP2T and go for a SPA2102 if you opt for an ATA. These are a far superior unit. Just make sure you enable QoS in your router as well if you opt for one of these/

VoIP over TCL cable is rock solid so there are no issues at all with call quality.

I've just helped somebody get connected to TelstraClear Cable, they used some basic router (I think they said it was supplied by TelstraClear?) and then threw a WL-520GU running Tomato in a DMZ.

From there, they used an SPA2102 and an SPA942 :)

Long story short the QoS on those WRP400's is "mediocre" at best, but the QoS in Tomato is superb!

Im with sbiddle, invest in an SPA2102 if you can spare the extra couple of bucks, they're much nicer and more reliable than the PAP2T :)

haha right, will have a think about it ;) I am leaning towards the SPA2102 and Linksys, but thats only because I have used and know the new Linksys is quality, average uptime of arround 6 weeks or more!

I've had an AM300 in half-bridge to a WL-520GU with an uptime of over 9 months, and even then it was only disrupted due to a power cut (Customer wasn't keen on paying for UPS). Never missed a single beat :D

This is with 15 SIP lines and a few thousand calls each month, so its not like it's "lightly used" either ;)

Steer clear of some of the new WAG160N style Linksys, horribly disappointing, don't even think about using SIP over them :(

I've used the AG310 (new model with ADSL modem, no wireless) for 12 months without ever crashing. I'd expect the newer models from Linksys to be stable.

PAP2T FTW. I live in London, and use WXC. Works great - I've had it since they launched, pretty much.

I think I'd get the SPA if it broke tho - I'd LOVE to hook up a fax machine (Well, my wife would for when she's buying property - lawyers are sooooooooo last centuary with things like this), but the PAP2T doesn't play well (I've had it work, in Wellington, but it wasn't fantastic).

But if you just want voice, I've had a PAP2T since.... um..... Jan 2007 or so? Maybe earlier? never had a problem with it. Infact, I dont remember how to configure it, 'cos I just plug it in, and make calls. It just works. That might be more WXC than that specific device tho!

From a support point of view the most I would say pap2t is one of the most problematic devices I've dealt with, would recommend the spa2102 over it.

That said - I've not had ANY problems with the PAP2T. Worked flawlessly. But for an extra $20 or so..... SPA FTW :)

Yes I did Nic :)..... The reason is the PAP2T dosn't do T38 fax ...here lies the problem 2102 does do it
