After a set of gruelling tests ( late August 2010) I can confirm Telecom is stopping VoIP traffic for WxC via its XT mobile network.

I have proven the wireless router is not at fault, as I swapped to the vodafone network and it worked fine.

So please let me know why this is so because WxC is not a fault.

Is that using internet.telecom.co.nz or direct.telecom.co.nz ?

I have a Cisco router with 3G fall back and I had no problems using my VFX line while the modem was on XT.

Just grabbed a pre paid XT sim this morning for my IPad to Test, had a few calls going to and from it with no issues, messaging is all good.

I had a play with a 3G router over XT + VFX a while back. This had issues with running a standard VFX provisioned ATA and certain phone calls.
Basically a few seconds into the call, the call would drop out. This seemed to affect calls that were answered virtually straight away - e.g. 0800 calls to an IVR.
When 3G steps up from idle to full go, there is a delay and usually packet lose. The SIP message acknowledging the call did not get through, therefore it got dropped from the WxC side a few seconds into the call.
Calls that had a bit more ring time, seemed to work OK.

Using the same type of 3G router in Vodafone variant, there was no issue.

Can you try a call to 0800 000 000 and see if that works ok? Make sure the iPad is completely (3G) idle at call setup.

Thanks Fraser, your describing exactly the symptoms AlarmNZ is seeing, the call is answered but the 200 ok does not get through to the far end, the reason the call drops is that there is no ack from the end point so the sip timer from the network drops the call at about 10 secs, my discussions with the AlarmNZ guys is that the unit is not passing the packets, the issue with power up is interesting as well but is part of the issue as the 200 ok is sent multiple times over about 8 secs.

Yes can reproduce the issue, it's the same issue as you and alarmNZ have seen, as you suggest I would tend to agree with you, I am guessing this is probably a technical limitation with XT since it can be reproduced across multiple connection types, I guess this is a plus for Vodafone and a negative for Telecom.

Obviously VoIp is not supported and "illegal" in their t&c's , but I will see who I can talk to about the actual performance as they them selves would want it to as good as possible.

Thanks for the info Fraser this was very useful and accurate, Neville this is exactly the issue your seeing, I'm guessing Vodafone will have toe your failover options.

A while ago (I think) there was talk or some tests of VFX using TCP, rather than UDP for traffic, or at least SIP signaling. Did this idea ever come to anything?
Would be interesting to try.

TCP has always been supported Fraser :)

TCP makes no difference Fraser, appears to be a bit of a bug with XT ..

I looked at this again and yes if the call is answered too quickly the call drops, while if its allowed to ring a couple of times all is OK.

Perhaps it could be something to do with the CID hand off ?

Nothing to do with CID, it looks like it's packet loss occuring during state transitions as the connection goes from 3G to HSDPA. because VoIP uses UDP rather than TCP no retransmission occurs.

Try the call again, but this time with a file downloding in the background - i.e. so that the 3G connection cannot drop to idle.
Would be interested to see what result that gives, as my theory is it is an issue during 3G idle to full go.
