I have been reading all of the guides and suggestions but am stuck!!!!! Here is the dilemma. Running a Dell Precision Laptop with XP pro SP2 with a Treo 700w. Both work great. Bought an Iomega BT USB adapter (Broadcomm) - brand new. Installed as directed. The laptop sees the phone and vice versa but they will not make a connection ever. I just can't ActiveSync these 2 units. I have added ports, switched ports, done whatever a neophyte like me can do but to no avail. Also tried to install the BT on a full desktop and had the exact same problems. No activesync and thus no functionality.

What I can tell you is my Treo SAYS it has incoming ports 0,4,7,8 but when I edit and select 7 or 8 it says "COM port could not be created. Check settings and try again"

When I open my BT devices drawer it has no COM ports listed.

When I plug BT in and check Device manager it says device is working properly and pops open under ports a line stating Standard Serial Port over BT link (COM5)

In ActiveSync connection setings I have tried every possible port - none work. What happens is I hit CONNECT and it scrolls each of the ports from 1-8 and then no connection is made and I get a message telling me to try again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

I realize I should have told you what my goal is. I live in a deep valley with no cable and spotty satellite. BUT.....my Treo gets a strong signal and when I use the cable and connect to my laptop with PDAnet it works pretty well. I want to get the BT working for my kids computer which is in another room so they can have Internet for homework etc.

PS - I do have a router and it does use the 191.168.0.1 location

Should I quit now? 8(

Hi there... To make the ActiveSync work you don't need any changes on your Pocket PC - actually don't touch it! Check our Bluetooth Guides for instructions.

First you have to configure ActiveSync on your PC to use an Incoming (Server) COM port. This COM port is one on your Bluetooth device, not on the Pocket PC. Then you have to create the pairing from your Pocket PC. Once you do this, it will automatically detect ActiveSync. That's all you need to do.

There's no COM port configuration required on your Pocket PC, and it doesn't matter what COM ports are configured on your Pocket PC.

This will help you use ActiveSync.

Now for your other question... Can you explain what you are trying to do? It's not clear if you want to use Bluetooth from your PC to the Treo 700w, or if you want to connect to the Treo 700w via cable and from one PC to another over Bluetooth.

If you are thinking of using Bluetooth to connect from one PC to another, I wouldn't do it. The signal is just enough to travel about 30 ft (10m) and if you have a wall between those two computers then it won't go through at all.

I am not sure this is available from Verizone Wireless in your state, but there are some Wi-Fi routers with built-in CDMA cards that will connect to the cellular network and then you can share the connection with any wi-fi enabled PC around the house or office. This could be something to think about? Even if your PCs don't have wi-fi you can easily add a USB wi-fi stick or a PCI card.

Thanks very much for responding to my post. Here is what I am trying to do.

I want to use the Treo 700w to bring Internet access into our home which has no cable access and satellite coverage is spotty. When I cable the Treo to the LapTop and use PDAnet ti works satisfactorally. My 2 sons have computers (one desk top, one laptop) and what I am trying to do with BT is get them access as well. Their rooms are pretty close to my office ( < 30 feet).

I have ActiveSync set on the laptop on COM 9 which is the same as my BT dongle. However, when I try to ActiveSync from the Treo I get the message that "AS cannot recognize the device for one or 2 reasons. Device not connected properly..... or
device not smartphone........." ALternatively sometimes the Treo looks like it is syncing with my desktop at work which is where I use it primarily - updating email etc but I cannot sync with any home computer. This occurs even after I have used the AS menu and asked it to connect via BT.

That's about it on this end.

STill thrashing around here. I don't know if this info will help or not. On the laptop, AS and BT dongle are on the same port. When I try to sync on the phone I get the message

Cannot find an existing BT partnership with a PC that supports AS. Would you like to set up a partnership"

I say yes and the phone immediately recognizes the laptop and offers 3 options, Hands free, AS and Dial up.

If I check AS I get a message on laptop that "BT connection was successful. Device (phone) is connected to the BT serial port on this computer".

BUT - as soon as I go to the AS program on the phone, hit the menu and hit "Connect via BT" I still get the message "Cannot find.,...................." as per above.

Any ideas?

I'd check any personal firewall software (if using Zone Alarm simply uninstall it and use the Windows XP SP2 firewall and a good combination of antivirus (Avast) and antispyware (Windows Defender).

Then I'd make sure the Bluetooth dongle is connected directly to a USB port, not to a USB Hub. And verify in Device Manager that the Power Management configuration for USB Root Hub (you can have more than one) is unchecked.

Even though the rooms are less than 10 m apart, the wall in between can be a barrier - the Bluetooth signal is very weak, because it's just for a personal area usage - not for local area networking in principle.

Basically it's for their own BT STack, but there are not so many items different to the Broadcom one.
